And, anyway, doesn't this apply to every team in the NFL? On any "given" Sunday?

I think he meant more like we are able to win some in the regular season, but when it comes to games that really count (the playoffs) we are nothing.

Sure. If you believe "functional" means that every year for the last 25 years the cowboys are relegated to hoping to make the playoff and maybe win a playoff game.

Okay then, how do we describe functional?

A winning playoff record?

The Cowboys have been in 11 playoff games since 2000. They have a 3-8 record which you claim is not "functional"? Why? Because they have a losing record in the playoffs? So does Green Bay, Kansas City, and Buffalo.

the Jaguars are 3-3 in the playoffs. They have played in almost half as many playoff games as the Cowboys but they have won 50% of theirs. Are they more or less functional than the Cowboys over that period of time?

Then again, every team goes out on the field with the proper number of players, they line up properly, and they play the game. Technically speaking, doesn't that make them all functional?

This is an exercise in semantics, the meaning of "functional" is not strictly described which renders the debate meaningless.

Payton didn't mention anything about the playoffs. Read between the lines. He's basically saying that any team with the type of management that wouldn't allow him almost full control are not "functional".

Payton is confirming what many of us have always known. He will NEVER agree to be the HC of the Dallas Cowboys.

Our last 25 years or so, our composite season winning record might be 60% of the time.
That is nonfunctional when you talk about a team. Why? Because none (I hope) of us is so blinded by our love of the team tha we see a functional team.
Functional means going and winning in the playoffs.
Have we done tha?
No.
9-7 and 1 and done seasons are just selling tickets and treading water, not winning championships.
