Per Mike Fisher, source says signing of Williams, end of Rico with the Cowboys

LOL, of course it likely does. When rumors came out that Dowdle might get $6MM or more (AAV) in FA, it was over for him here.

The Cowboys did what they always do. Watch a productive player go out the door because they are so cheap, maybe sign a worse player for less money and hope that they somehow get lucky. Or assume a draft pick will just fix the problem.

It's literally been their strategy for the past decade.

I think Jerry and Company are total morons running a football team but can’t kill them for this IF IF IF RB is a focus in the draft. I mean early draft not the 6th or 7th rounds. So I withhold judgement until then.

Well, it makes sense. Dowdle has one year of success that came at the right time for him to maximize his value. I can't blame Dallas on this one for feeling that he might not worth his market value. I'd prefer that their answer be getting a back who has done better than averaging under 4 yard per carry the past two years, but you can't buy filet mignon with food stamps.

Hopefully we find that in the draft

Right. If we use this as an excuse to not take a back until the third day of the draft, it will be just as moronic as past drafts where everyone knew we needed a back and we either didn't take one or just took one late.

lol this is funny, "we've allocated resources to the position already and our focus is elsewhere!" lol man these guys are nuts, I could see that happening, start picking up a back LATE in the draft like how foolish

We should, if we prioritize it. If we do like some want us to do and not take an RB early because it's a deep draft, our chances of missing increase. I can understand not taking one in the first, although I'd be hard-pressed not to grab Jeanty if he's there, but it needs to be a priority in the second if we don't and the third at the latest (with a second back taken later to increase our chances of finding a quality starter).

In the end, if a rookie beats him out? The 5-10, 220-pound Williams, who might lack some elusiveness, figures as the third-down back, But for now? Pencil him in as a cheap-option (Rico might get twice this much money) who is still a younger back (he turns 25 in April) who will have something to prove.
For starters, a rookie will beat him out. But still, Williams will be a decent backup. Better than Zeke last year.
