I've said this for years, but never as succinctly as Mike Fisher put it.

"Drafting for need is football suicide. Needs come and go. Talent stays for 12 years."

That's exactly right.

It is for 31 NFL GM's. The other guy seems to be able to repeatedly get away with whatever he wants.

But I completely agree with his statement.

And I find it ironic that most would too, until you mention a certain name or two to them.

Then you get the "Well yeah, but,,,,"

Drafting rules are useless. Every draft is different. You never know what position may get a run or how trades will change the board.

Drafting for need is how you fill holes. Do you take the 8th best CB or the best OC because the CB is rated a little higher but you need an OC.

What if you have Witten at TE. Do you take TEs in the 2nd round because they have the highest rating? And who's ratings are you using because yours may be inherently biased.

Isn't it funny how Fisher put this so perfectly after Sturm wrote 1500 words on this about four weeks ago?

Love me some Fish. Surely he was not plagiarizing an idea. Simply paying an homage to Sturm.

So the standard draft rule of drafting BPA should stand...however some confuse this with Best Athlete Available....

So if Ramsey is the BAA and Zeke is the BPA....who should you take?

I agree with his comment but the NFL is a win now league and you have coaches and gms who need to keep there jobs now.

That's my biggest concern in the draft room, scouts' voices getting drowned out by coaches. Coaches looking short term and scouts looking at long term/best talent.

Being the bright guy that you are, I know you understand the concept of tiered drafting.
The board is not absolute whatsoever.
You just described two players almost certainly grouped in the same tier,,,so of course you take the player/position you need most in that case.

Then you draft the tight end and use him in your offense...and hope one of your great tight ends doesnt murder someone because you suddenly have a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.

LOL. You draft talent at positions you need. The Cowboys have followed this and have done well with it. That quote is nothing to me. You need a pass rusher, a linebacker and a corner or safety. Go and get the best one.

Now when you are trading for a need in the draft that's when it comes back to bite you. But you sit there at #4 and you take the best player for a need? I don't see how that is a problem or how it will bite you.

You think Sturm invented the concept? No.

Fish just summarized it well in few words. That's all.

It's both. If they best player available on your board in the second round is a guard, I would hope you would skip to the next player if they are say, a densive tackle.
