Peter King has a lengthily article about the Dallas draft in his MMQB this morning. It really goes in depth about Dallas decision not to trade back with Baltimore, Trying to move up for Lynch, Garrett wanting Elliott over Ramsey and Prescott vs Cook. One thing that interested me is if we moved back in the Baltimore trade and Elliott and Ramsey were taken, we would have taken Leonard Floyd at 6.

Garrett, on Monday, closed his office door and spent seven hours looking at every snap of Ramsey at Florida State in 2015, and every snap of Elliott at Ohio State in 2016. He liked Ramsey. He loved Elliott. Garrett told the Joneses he favored Elliott. So the group was solid as the clock ran down here for pick number four of the first round of the 2016 draft.

A direct quote from the article.
Dallas had success running the ball in 2015, even with teams loading the box on the Cowboys when Tony Romo was hurt. Jones and the coaching staff feel a great running game will keep the offense on the field more and a suspect defense on the field less, and they view Elliott as a far more versatile back than Dallas’ 2014 rushing champ, the since-departed DeMarco Murray.

I should never be surprised by the opinions on this board. Although there are some opinions that outright shock me. Hell, some of them are mine.

But the idea some brought to the table prior to the draft the Dallas running game wasn't the lynchpin to the success of 2014 was truly amazing. To the point for a brief moment I questioned what I knew. Yet there is no chance of getting away from the truth the running game benefited the passing game and the defense.

And after seeing all the players and coaches and GMs, and even what the team accepts as fact, I wonder where those folks are who put pencil to paper and did some statistical analysis to come away with an opinion contrary to not only what people in football were saying, but the most basic truth to what this game is about.

Moving the chains, staying ahead of third down, controlling the ball and clock, and protecting the defense, as most teams do.

Here it is, the way the team, along with most people associated with this game think about Elliott versus Ramsey. It's basic logic.

Nice to see Leornard Floyd was a target.

I mocked him at 4 and got killed for it on this board.

Man, Jerry really loved Paxton. Broaddus was right on that one, even though he'll get no credit for it. There was a point where everyone was talking Goff and Wentz, and he kept insisting the Cowboys loved Paxton as much as either of those guys.

Don't know how I'd have felt if we got Elliot and Lynch and then had to shut it down till Day 3 though. I mean, drafting Jaylon almost seems like Jerry's revenge for not getting his way with the Paxton trade.

The running game played a huge role, because for the first time, it allowed Romo to operate against defenses that were playing honest. But it wasn't Murray, it was the OL and a healthy Romo and Dez that were the key. The article quotes the team as saying what very few would argue with, that Elliott will be a significant upgrade over Murray.

Think about it. A significant upgrade over a RB who had well over 1,800 yards.

It just gives you a behind the scenes look that it is never as simple as liking one player. You are constantly weighing options : other players, trades, etc.

While sometimes things will go your way, very rarely does everything go the way you want. The future of your franchise can be made by those few minutes when you need to decide who to pick, trade back, trade up when your plan A is taken away.

Let's tap the breaks. But first, a quick disclaimer: I love the Zeke pick and I agree he has a better all-around game then Murray, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll have a better year than Murray in 2014. That was an anomaly.

I knew it all along and refused to bow to the pass happy people out there that refused to give the proper credit to the running game and where it took us in 2014.

I'm still smiling today. My cup overflows with happiness that we have gone back to that basic principle. Control the clock and demoralize defenses. Remain unpredictable and keep our defense off the field. Just beautiful.

I think the zero fumbles could big for us. It seemed like Murray coughed the ball up in almost every game with play-off implications. One things for sure the pick really puts the pressure on the offense to be our dominant unit.

There's no pressure. Our offense eats, sleeps, and lives for this opportunity.

The good thing about the way the draft shook out is that there wasn't a "wrong pick" at #4. Had we taken Ramsey, it would have helped improve our defense. Taking Elliott helps both the offense and the defense; we win either way. Personally, I was of the opinion that Elliott was the best all-around player in the draft, so to say that I was pleased is an understatement.

So Cook over Prescott? That's interesting. We'll see how that turns out for both of them.

Statistically I would agree though stats don't always tell the whole story. A one yard carry on third and one can mean more than a ten yard carry that ends up being a punt three plays later. But matching murrays yards is gonna be tough, especially as a rookie

It was widely viewed that Goff, Wentz and Lynch were the tier 1 QBs. Cook and Hackenberg were the tier 2 QBs and Prescott was among the tier 3 guys.

If you could get a tier 2 QB in the 4th...not too much of a shock that they might want him over the tier 3 guy. Not saying you were shocked...just putting things in perspective. Also remember...they did work cook out or have him in.

Gotcha. I figured Prescott since they worked him or visited with 4 times that we know of.
