So what if Barnett seriously injured a Bears player because the referee was standing around scratching his *** instead of taking the troublemaker out of the fray?
It's not the ref's job to dive in like it's WWE either. There are remedies for officials in those cases and what that official did isn't one of them.

At MOST, the ref's job is try to push the guys off one another while blowing his whistle. Refs should've handled Barnett earlier in the game...If he continues, then he gets a personal foul, which should then lead to an ejection, if he gets another one. That's pretty much the only thing I can think for the refs to do and which they didn't.

Ref's going into a pile or a fight is entering at his own risk and it is not really recommended on any level no matter the sport.

In a rare Zone history moment, I agree with you, Rack. :)

Seriously that ref not only pulled him out of the pile with a choke hold, but what if he'd somehow injured himself being pulled out? Refs go into the pile all the time, but they grab around the waist. This guy basically did a take down. And if Barnett had swung or pushed him, he'd be suspended and heavily fined.

It's not about whether the player should "man" up or should be afraid because a 60 yr old man took down a 26 yr old. It's about the Ref going overboard in his efforts for which he should've gotten more than a hand slap.

Well it's about dang time I'm right about something. :D

Refs breakup up hockey fights all the time.

Guys like Barnett drive me crazy ... they walk the line just enough so that they don't do anything eggregious enough to get penalized or ejected, like throw a punch, they just make the game last 30 minutes too long because the refs have to go and break up the jawing and the pushing after literally every single play before they can set the ball and restart the playclock. I'm all in favor for a new league policy ... one in game warning for constant jawing, after that it's ejectiion time. It's the only way you can get guys like Barnett under control, since it's apparently even out of line for the official to even physically restrain the players from acting like 8 year olds.

You have to admit that's not the way to go about restraining a player. The ref is lucky Barnett didn't think he was a Bears player and whip around and knock his 60 year old *** the hell out. What would have happened to Barnett if he had done that? Suspended for the year, I'd imagine. But you couldn't blame him.

The Pack were getting their butts whipped, and at games end tempers will flare in piles as guys get their shots in. Yes, it's the refs responsibility to keep that under control. This ref was way out of line, though.

..the ref shouldn't have put his hands on him. That's the surest way to spark a lawsuit...or in this case a grievance.
In every game, that I've seen, refs put their hands on the players to break up fights or to remove players from a pile to locate the ball. Filing grievance would be silly for just touching players.

There is nothing wrong with putting hands on players but this ref did go too far to move a player away from an incident.

Well yeah that was kinda my point. Not about how he shouldn't have tried to break up the fracas. It was the method he used to do it.
