I would roll the dice with Dak. Let the season play out. If he balls out and leads us to a SB win, then he deserves whatever the market is. If he has another sub-par playoff game and he's the main reason we lost, then let him test the open market like Zeke did. I love my team, and that includes Dak, but this is my final season giving him my full support. Again, if he's the main reason we don't make any noise this season, then vámonos! I'll be the one who opens the door to let him walk.

Sounds like a lot of excuse making. If Dak wins a SB, nobody is going to say release. Notice how you qualify it as Dak is “the main reason we lost”. We’ve seen his many excuses the Dakazoids make in absolving him of blame. Suddenly it’s a “team loss”. Even Gallup is supposed to alter the laws of physics and prevent an INT…

Not really.
Jerry isn't obligated to do anything.

Wrong, Jerry is obligated to do every thing, he owns the team. He just makes some bad choices, and there might be one coming up after this season.

Well he is obligated to count the required portion of Dak's salary and signing bonus against the team's salary cap.

Therein lies the problem.
Seems like Jerry, the businessman, has already done that.

Dak Prescott has Jerry Jones in contract checkmate — and Jerry knows it

https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profo...ones-in-contract-checkmate-and-jerry-knows-it

There’s a beautiful irony to the situation in which Cowboys owner and G.M. Jerry Jones finds himself, when it comes to quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract.

Prescott currently has PRECISELY the kind of leverage that Jerry would relish and maximize if he were in Dak’s shoes.

The problem traces to the Cowboys failing and refusing to reward the 2016 fourth-round draft pick after he became eligible for a second contract, following his third season. They retained him in 2019 at a bargain-basement price, before using the franchise tag in 2020.

That shows the dead money hit for 2024 only I believe. There would also a huge dead money hit in 2025.

Multiple sources report the total dead money after this season as $61,915,000 (for 2024 and 2025). Making Dak a post June 1 cut affects only the timing of the dead money hit, not the amount of it. Any way you slice it, that's about $62 million of cap space wasted on a player that's not on the team.

Dak's contract has been restructured over and over, but only delaying the inevitable.

Absolute nonsense. He has all the leverage only if you're a terrible GM.
Just with restructures...Dallas can make over 70m in cap space next year. We will be fine....not sure why people still get bent out of shape every year saying we won't be able to sign anyone and we can't do this or that. NFL teams routinely make $50+ million in cap space by putting pen to paper. It's a non issue.

Jerry n Stephen messed up when they agreed to a no trade clause. Dak's agent took everything they wanted, and set up the next contract. Think about that they were looking to this contract to cash in even more. They're going to do it again, and Jerry can't stand getting outclassed in negotiations (if you can call it that). Enter Trey Lance, signaling desperation and a cry for help haha. Cowboys have a team capable of supporting a top ranked Rookie QB, and taking those savings and building an even better team.

 Sometimes I forget there are people here that sat at the back of the class. If you're slow and want me to mansplain it better, let me know. :)

Moronic article. Seems like there’s one of these every year. There’s no leverage anymore or less than any other player. If Jerry thinks you are great, you’ll get paid. If he doesn’t think you are, then you’ll have to negotiate with Steven “Mr Crab” Jones without Jerry's guidance.

Both are staring down the barrel of a gun. If Dak does not take us to at least the NFC Championship, he will play out his contract next year with a nosse around his neck. If Dak takes us to at least the NFC Championship and wins a Super Bowh he will have Jerry right where he wants him. He plays out his contract or plays his last year as a Cowboy. I do not see a team that Dak could go play for that puts him in as good as a position to not only win, but get that contract he wants. IMO Jerry has done all he can, it's now up to Dak to do all he can.

There is plenty of time to figure out a replacement if Jerry wanted too. But even if he does want to move on there's some hard decisions to be made. Can't afford to cut him, can't trade him, he's got a fairly big cap hot next year so that might be tough to hang onto and sign CD or Micah. But in order to eat the cap hot next year and walk away with nothing other than a comp pick Jerry would really have to want to move on. Then there's the replacement piece. Treys cheap not but people assume he won't want a big contract except he will. Could draft a QB in round 1 but they will have a middle round pick at worst. Would have to over draft one most likely especially if you want them in round 1. Yea it's possible to move on but 95% chance Jerry just caves to daks

demands.
