The only way Prescott has Dallas over a barrel is if Dallas wins. If Prescott happens to have a bad playoff experience and Dallas doesn't advance again, Dallas could move on from Prescott.

Philadelphia and Atlanta both incurred larger cap hit when releasing their QBs, much larger than it would be for Dallas, and have survived.

If Dallas releases Prescott as a June 1st cut they will incur 25 million in dead money and save 34 million on the cap. To create cap space you could restructure all these new deals signed this year. You can manipulate the cap and still field a competitive team.

You then concentrate on getting Lance ready and still have Rush.

Dallas has options.

I trust McClay to find a franchise level QB in 2-4 yrs. I’m ready to move on from Dak, if he can’t get past the divisional round, with a roster that everyone keeps telling me is the most talented in X amount of yrs. Yes, he has a trade clause in his contract. So, what? Tell him you’re moving on and not going to resign him. The trade clause is about protecting him from going to a bad team. Do you really think Dak would want to stay with a FO and 40+% of a fan base that don’t want him? Eat the dead money after this yr if he doesn’t get past the Div round.

Meh, every good to great qb in the league has his team by the jeuvos rancheros.

I won't fault Jones for not signing Dak early. His rookie year was great, 2017 he couldn't hit the broadside of a barn and 2018 started off the same until the Coop deal resurrected Dak and saved the season.

It had to be challenging gauging his market value moving forward. They probably knew he was going to command big money and wanted to see him prove to be consistent.

Cut

TREY! come on down
Not saying I want this but if he were to be cut or not resigned, what is the dead weight of his contract moving forward? I’m starting to get worried about keeping Micah. With the Bosa signing and the Burrow signing I don’t know if we can keep Parsons, and CD and Dak. I think you keep a generational player in Parsons over an above average player in Dak. So my question is, is it either or at that point?

Jerry has his Ace in the Hole - Trey Lance. No seriously, until the Lance trade Jerry was really stuck with Dak. But if Lance can develop into a decent QB at least Jerry can let him walk after his contract is up. Of course this is a long shot, but it is still an outside chance.

Jerry lost leverage when he allowed Dak to fleece him on his last deal. The no trade, no franchise tag clauses tied Jerry to the fence post with his little Bic pen hanging out and ready to sign the next deal. As soon as Jerry signed that deal he should have known he would be in this position today. His next move should have been to start drafting QBs hoping to find a Dak replacement no matter how low the probability was.
Agree, Lance can sit behind Cooper for a year and develop. No need to mortgage the franchise for an average QB, look at what happened to the Ravens with Flacco (He actually won a Super Bowl).

Dak may go bye-bye after the season. Jones didn't pick up Lance for no reason. If Lance shows them much, they'll save the $34 million Dak is supposed to make next year.

Unfortunately, the Joneses don't have to worry about being fired for a bad season. So if they gamble on Trey Lance, the only people who're getting fired are coaches.

I have to agree that Dak having leverage makes little to no sense. Reading the tea leaves, it's obvious the Cowboys' eyes are starting to wander a bit in the case he fails in the playoffs again. All of the void money coming due in 2025 just puts an onus on him either winning a championship or being replaced with a lower cost option.

So, why this article? Simple: all of Florio's sources are agents. And agents want the perception to be that their client holds the advantage in negotiations.

How? Jerry should have a respectable number and if dak wont sign for that then let his *** go.

Idk why teams let these QBs hold them hostage. Build the strongest team you possibly can. Hold on to all your game changers and have some depth. Draft a QB every year in some round and when it’s time to pay them, let them walk. The numbers how that paying a QB big bucks does not really work out.

Yes I know mahomey is an exception. He is 1 of 1 so forget that pipe dream

The title of the article says it all, and is absolutely correct.

The structure of the current deal puts the team in a horrible position.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I yearn for a competent GM.....

Who cares. Just play the season.
Thank you!!! I can’t wait till we have football to discuss and not speculation on contracts. This contract stuff takes the fun out of it.
Many members (I for one) will engage and discuss the games as the Cowboys play their 2023 schedule.
But there will still be a good number of CZers that will create threads about impending contracts to be worked out.
Lamb, Parsons, Prescott, etc.; some fans discussing & dabating players' future earnings \ remaining on the team find that more appealing, than their play individually --- plus the team as a whole --- striving to again making the playoffs and being a championship contender.

I think that the Lance trade was a shot at Dak and MM. if they don’t get to the NFC title game at a minimum I think they are both gone. Give Lance a shot. If it doesn’t work out then you get a decent draft pic and go get a QB. If it does work out with Lance then all the better. If we miss or bow out of the playoffs early again I think Jerry is done.
