News: PFT: Dez Bryant gets five years, $70 million from Cowboys

It's pretty apparent that the Cowboys blinked on this one.

I don't think so.

Look at Justin Houston's contract. My calculations of Dez contract based on the pay of WRs compared to pass rusher as a percentage of Houston's contract came out to almost exactly what Dez got. It seems like exactly what the market value should be and they did delay 22M of the guarantee.

That's not all that big of a distinction. But how do you know this was a hold up?

Dez said it himself. "13 is ok but I need security."

He was fine with 12.8-14m a year but the guaranteed money was the problem. The original 10/114m deal only has 22m guaranteed.

This still means he plays 2015 on 'only 23m' guaranteed but the other half is due in March 2016. That is a big compromise.

 I love this gif.

I think Jerry looked up from his Dagwood Sandwich, Stephen gave out a short little chuckle and and Jerry polished off his bottle of beer upon the news of the NFLPA threats to sue. Jerry let out a burp and they probably looked at each other and new it was in the bag.

Not if they intended to be in that neighborhood all along.

I seriously doubt that Dallas started off their negotiation with the guaranteed money they expected him to get when all was said and done. It was their starting point... just like Dez's starting point was Megatron's contract.

It was a compromise for both... and I think they both got pretty close to what they expected.

Yeah I don't get that. It was rumored Bryant wanted Calvin Johnson money. He didn't get that. So can we say he blinked first?

The person paying always starts at the lowest amount; the person who wants to be paid always starts at the highest amount. In good negotiations, both parties meet in the middle.

Never take the first offer because it will always be lower than the negotiated rate. Always offer a figure higher than you expect to get then you work back from there.*

*The caveat is you're a person worth having. It doesn't work for people who aren't desired.

Oh I agree. Was just pointing out to those who said the Cowboys blinked that you could easily claim Bryant blinked using the same logic - he started high but then took less.

Turns out both Jerry and Stephen were in New York negotiating with Roc Nation until 3 am. No wonder they weren't at the signing. I'm glad they worked it out.
