It would have played out like that before the rule change. I recall three times I thought T.O. was forced out and the refs never called it once in our favor. At least now our D can do it to other teams.

Well IF they would have made the right call the rule would have worked. :D

The problem in your scenario was the refs not the rule.

I completely agree. So, since we know the refs will never change their way of thinking, it works in our favor to have a rule change.

I on the other hand think the refs should have to call it right or at least be able to review it...not just get rid of the rule because they might not get it right on some occasions.

But hey spilt milk...it's done...it will be interesting to see how it plays out this year.

IMO, I like taking this out of the refs hands even if it could be reviewable. I just don't trust them to get it right when it comes to something like a "force out."

If you watch college football, many teams will "defer" which means they get to choose to start off the second half.

Most teams would rather start the second half off with the ball rather than the first, but under the old rules, there was no way you could choose to do that if you won the toss. Now you can.

So if you win the toss and defer, the other team gets the choice for the first half, and most often will choose to receive. Then you get to receive to start off the second half.

Got it...thanks.

It sure is...now anyone near the sideline gets knocked out as soon as they touch the ball.

I don't think I like this rule change...it sure will suck if the games on the line and Owens goes for the first down on the sideline..would have been in and now gets pushed out and the games over.

As you said they better make sure those patterns are further away from the sideline now.

People. Its not gonna affect the game that much. There were 16 called last year. That isnt many for the 1000's of plays ran in the NFL every year. Out of the plays we ran last year I remeber 3 that was not called in our favor and 1 that was. We ran a lot more than 4 out routes on the sideline.

I do agree with the facemask rule change though.
Thank goodness the stupid force out rule is gone. Catch the ball in bounds, if the defense keeps you from doing it then it should be a good defensive play. Never understood how that idiot rule ever got approved.

I never understood why there was a force out rule in the first place. Why shouldn't a defender be able to push a guy in the air out of bounds thus creating an incompletion. It's called good defense. Why should a guy be able to have a catch if he isn't in bounds?

The new "no force out" rule is interesting. I like it, actually.

But it is going to change some sideline pass patterns ....
No more stupid force outs saving a horrible pass, catch the damn ball in bounds.

Love the rule changes. Glad to get rid of the force out rule and the petty 5-yard face mask rule.

It must be something the writer of the article got screwed up since no one has yet to identify what a forward handoff is.

do you remember how a QB would throw a quick hitch to the WR behind the line of scrimmage, and if the WR dropped it, the ruling was incomplete? even though it was a forward pass?

w/ the rule change, that would be a fumble, the key is if it's behind the LOS

O.K. That makes perfect sense. I always thought it should be a fumble anyways since it was a forward pass. Didn't that happen to Moss in the Dallas game and it was ruled an incomplete pass?

So far this offseason, the league has done pretty good w/ the new rule changes. Just hope refs don't make bull calls against Barber.

I agree, I never understood why that wasn't made a rule at all before

it's a lost ball behind the LOS, it should be a fumble, so I'm glad they instituted it

I had arguments w/ friends all throughout last season about how stupid it was for that not to count as a fumble. Surprisingly, stuff like that happens a lot in today's league so I'm glad the NFL changed it.

Nah, I don't think that's what they mean.

If so, then a shovel pass would also be a fumble.

I don't think the quick hitch can be considered any sort of "handoff."

What about calling time-outs seconds before a field goal is taking place. Such as what happened in the Bills game this season. Shouldn't they have addressed that, or am I missing something here?

.

That's probably the only good rule change they've made in years.

If a Defender does his job and keeps the WR from getting both feet in he shouldn't be "Penalized" by having the ref give the WR the completion. WR's have it easy enough, make them AT LEAST earn their sideline catches.
