I think it's worth noting that Garrett did actually take a shot at the media, but did so in a very subtle way when he mentioned the world we live in and then brought up Walter Cronkite. Walter Cronkite was known as one of the most trusted news reporters, who would deliver the story as honestly as he could. When giving his opinion he would make that known as well. People respected his reporting for it's accuracy. Now that might have been lost on half of the people in that room and many who did not listen, but he was making a point for anyone who wanted to actually pay attention.
Here are some relevant Cronkite Quotes:
“I am dumbfounded that there hasn’t been a crackdown with the libel and slander laws on some of these would-be writers and reporters on the Internet.”
“Objective journalism and an opinion column are about as similar as the Bible and a Playboy magazine.”
“In seeking truth you have to get both sides of a story.”
“Our job is only to hold up the mirror – to tell and show the public what has happened.”
