I do think Theisman is a fool and I'll likely be watching MNF with the radio on and the TV sound down this year, but I see Joe's point in this one. He was just saying that shorter guys are usually quicker than taller, longer-legged ones. Look at Randel-El, Steve Smith, Santana Moss, even our own Terry Glenn and Jamaica Rector. All are known for their quickness and none are tall. It's the same reason most cornerbacks are on the shorter side.

Matt Jones is a good example in the other direction. He may be really fast, but "quick" isn't a word you'd use to describe him.

Ummm didn't we have a guy a few years ago, Randall Williams who was as fast/quick as those you mentioned but was rather tall?

Ummm Thiesman was correct it's Clownheiser that looked foolish JT returned punts in college and the CFL....the lower to the ground you are the quciker you can stop in a dime and cut - you're great PR guys ala White Shoes Johnson even our own K-mart ...were smallish...Upright Return men get their clocks cleaned and lead to fumbles....You can get away being taller as a KR guy but your ideal PR guy is 5 '10' as JT correctly stated.
I thought we were talking about WRs here:confused:

uhh Matt Jones is not "quick". He's not shifty. He's a long strider. I love the player but I would have never called him quick. Deceptively fast though.

I think Thiesman refrained from making Kornheiser look stupid, to be honest. By changing the subject.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't think Theismann's comments were stupid.

Apparently, most people don't understand the concept of generality.

Theismann was making a general statement - smaller receivers are quicker.

That is the case in general. Marvin Harrison, Deion Branch, Tim Dwight, Steve Smith, Santana Moss, etc. are all under 5' 11 and are very quick. Taller receivers tend to be long striders.

Of course, you will always find exceptions, but I assume that Theisman was speaking in general terms.

Even so, he was just uttering his opinion. If we call everyone who utters or offers an opinion stupid, this forum, along with validating usernames, should just attach a dunce cap to everyone's avatar.

Some people get bothered by the silliest things.

Sigh.

Actually I agree with Theesman on one microscopic point he made, that a QB moving to WR has a better chance of succeeding if he doubles as a Punt returner.

But, I think his overriding generality was that QBs moving to the WR position need to be short. Which is bogus. True most QBs moving to WR are shorter, because they aren't big/strong enough to play QB in the NFL. But that doesn't make it a prereq...

Matt Jones apparently didn't have the arm strength to play NFL QB. There were some people predicting Vince Young would be moved to WR also, because of concerns with him being able to grasp an NFL offense. It really has nothing to do with their height. It has to do with their speed/elusiveness. Is a shorter guy more likely to be "quick," yes... but a successful QB/WR transplant doesn't have to be quick.

You must be from West Virginia.

I'm not whining, I'm criticizing the sorry product that ESPN is putting out every Monday night. You might wanna get a handkerchief, you've got some of Kornhole's baby batter on your chin.

These are some tacky cheap shots! If you're not intelligent enough to debate your point of view, w/o personal attacks, then do us all a favor and don't reply at all.

I disagree with thiesman about smaller guys being quicker. It's just easier for smaller guys to break tackles, and make people miss. There is simply less of them to grab.

It's much harder tackling a small elusive guy than a fast bigger guy(tyson thompson for instance)

its easier to miss them. But that doesnt mean they are "quicker"

No, Ra Williams had next to no quickness or agility. He was just fast in a straight line.

Theisman is one of the most annoying announcer on television. I don't always disagree with what he says, but it's how he says it that's annoying. I think the previous poster hit the nail on the head. The reason short college QBs are converted to WR or DB is because they are short (ie. Woody Danzler). They are great athletes, so they want to utilize their skills, but you have to be reasonably tall at the NFL level to be a QB. They don't make great WR/DBs because of their lack of height. That's what Kornheiser was trying to say. Height has nothing to do with it. Physical ability, speed, and quickness are what make them great players.
