"SWEEPING CHANGES" COMING IN MIAMI

A source with knowledge of the situation in South Florida tells us that "sweeping changes" are most likely coming for the Dolphins. And soon.

Coach Cam Cameron? Out. General Manager Randy Mueller? Out as soon as Monday, even though he's been doing research all year for free agency and the draft.

We're told that Parcells already has been working directly with the league office to obtain the appropriate permissions to hire Cowboys V.P. of college and pro scouting Jeff Ireland.

As Peter King of SI.com pointed out earlier in the week in his MMQB column, Parcells' contract makes clear that he merely is the overseer of the football operations.

"We set it up so the general manager I hire will have that authority. I want to make it clear: I don't want to be the general manager. I don't want to be the head coach. I told Wayne [Huizenga] that very clearly. I don't think it will be an issue.''

If it is an issue -- if the league concludes that Parcells has final say over personnel -- then the Fins might have trouble finding a G.M. Under league rules, a team is not required to allow a front office employee to leave unless he will have final say in his new job.

So if it's determined that the Tuna has the juice, the only guys he'll be able to hire are guys who are permitted by their teams to leave, or who have contracts that specifically allow a premature departure.

And even if a guy is in the final year of his contract, most front office deals run through the draft.

With all that said, there's a growing sense in some circles that Parcells will get Ireland, and that the pair will work together in reshaping the front office.

Another source tells us that the fates of Mueller and Cameron have been sealed by people telling the Tuna that the current G.M. and coach don't burn the midnight fish oil in South Florida. Parcells, a workaholic, doesn't like the idea of guys not doing all they can to win.

Inside source, meaning the janitor or water-boy for the Dolphins...

Yeah right. Like Parcells is going to Miami so the GM he hires will have final authority on personnel. Give me a break.

I think the league is going to get a mighty fight from Jerry if Parcells tries to strongarm anything.

And I love how PFT (and maybe Parcells) just assume that Jeff would want to go there. There's no consideration at all that Ireland patiently waited his turn here for years and might want to stay here for a while.

And once more for those who will claim that Ireland will "never" be GM here... Jerry is 66 and Stephen has said that he does intend to hire a GM when he takes over.

And because they beat me to it... A big :fact: to what Bach and lurker posted.

Anyone think Brady Quinn would have been a great fit in Miami now?

He may still be there before it's over.

Or, a combination of Testaverde and Chris Simms.

I know some don't like Simms, but he was playing very well when he got hurt and I think he is still worth a shot for someone like Miami.

But, Parcells will be looking for the next Romo either in the draft or via trade.

Matt Moore?

They were probably told that Parcells was working to get permission to negotiate with Ireland - and then PFT jumped straight to "hire".

Well I heard this morning on Mike & Mike that Cam Cameron has ties with Bobby Knight from when they were at Indiana. Bobby's real high on Cam, and we all know about Bill's relationship with Bobby. I have to think Cam will get at least 1 more year.

I just hate that Bill made such a big deal about Sean Payton going after our guys and now he's doing the same damn thing.

Well, Ireland can't be forced to go there no matter what Parcells or the League say. He can't be traded without his permission or willingness. If he wants to stay a Cowboy, he will stay a Cowboy.

If he decides to leave, Jerry is very capable of finding another GM. I'm sure a 13-2 job with the Cowboys gets more talented applicants than a 1-15 job with the dolphins.

What a joke! Parcells role in Miami is exactly Jerry's role in Dallas, (with the obvious exception of ownership duties). Jerry doesn't handle contract details, that's what Stephen does, but Jerry has final say on everything, including all business matters as well as personnel matters, thus he's the GM. That's exactly what Parcells will do in Miami.

Ireland will be nothing more than Parcells personnel guy in Miami, just like he is in Dallas for Jerry. The idea that Ireland would have final say in Miami on personnel matters or will exercise GM duties in regards to the business matters of the club is ridiculous and everyone in the NFL knows it!

It's an interesting thought. I think they may give Beck a chance before trying to trade for Quinn.

I know it won't happen, but I bet Parcells would love to find a way to get Weis from Notre Dame.

Weis won't leave though. He has had a few great recruiting classes and will be back in the top ten within the next two years.

He was doing very well when he got hurt last year though. He should have all his arm strength back by the begining of next season.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. BP is going have final say in everything. Ireland will just be his Yes man.

There's no way BP is going to give Ireland real GM duties other than scouting players and doing the dirty work.

That sounds credible. Parcells will only "oversee" the GM. For a 4 year contract. But the GM has final say. LOL.

It will all be up to ireland, and I am betting since parcells and ireland were close here and parcells fired people to promote him that Irleand does indeed like parcells.

None of us know. I still dont understand why ireland would leave here to go to miami if he is not the gm. If they are offering him the gm job then I can understand. That is the job he should take, that is why he is in the business.

No one can blame him. They could give ireland stephens title and maybe keep him around.

All I know is this is going to be very annoying during the best time of the year. Starting monday it is going to be all about ireland and garret and sporano leaving and owens ankle.

Who knows in two weeks Ireland could be gm, sporano the head coach, Todd Haley the offensive coordinator.......that would be a real kick in the pants.

I just hope tom ciskowski has done his work and is ready for a very important draft.

and bill had a chance to get him when we needed a qb and he passed. people put too much stock in the former bp player stuff. yes bp does it maybe even more than most, but that doesn't mean everyone will wind up on his team.

That's how his deal is structured -- that allows him to make hires like this. Very smart contract.

It's not even how the contract is worded.
