Following his own rules is irrelevant.
I dunno, it seems to me that demonstrating some self-discipline would be a good way of starting to get his life under control, of earning his way back into the league... indeed, it would probably impress the powers that be if he imposed rules on himself, and stuck with them, even more stringent rules than the league required of him...
I'm not the most disciplined person around, but when I was diagnosed with glucose intolerance, I went right out and bought a bunch of diet Pepsi, gave my Pepsi in the fridge away... then, a few years later, when the glucose intolerance turned into diabetes, I knocked potatos, pastas and breads out of my diet... lost 40 pounds pretty quick in the process... both moves worked well, for a time... then I finally had to go on medication for the diabetes, which has turned out to be a blessing, I can now eat a LITTLE of those things I was denying myself, and still have my blood sugar in the range I want it (100-120 consistently, with the odd reading down around 90)...
Now, I'm having a problem with persistent high blood pressure... not sky high, but the doctor wants to bring it down... he put me on a second medicine, but it had no effect, so last week he sent me for a kidney doppler (basically, an ultrasound of my kidneys), on the theory that I might have a narrowing of the renal arteries... I don't, happily... so my boss, who was an emergency room physician before he took to building hotels, suggested that even though I was drinking caffeine-free Diet Pepsi almost exclusively, I needed to knock out the sodium that's found in that drink too...
So I went and found Diet-Rite Cola, and Sam's Club Diet Cola at Wal-Mart... no sugar, no caffeine, no carbs, no sodium... I also took to drinking Crystal Light Iced Tea with Raspberry for variety-- the sugar-free kind, obviously... and my blood pressure has come down 10-15 points on both ends since making that switch...
So, when it's something that I think is really important for my health, I can discipline myself to make changes in my lifestyle... if Jones can't make the necessary changes in his life to stay out of trouble, that tells me that the NFL isn't that important to him...
