Having committed $12.8 million with the franchise tag for wide receiver Dez Bryant, the Cowboys plan to proceed carefully in free agency.

During an interview with SiriusXM NFL radio, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team was more likely to slow-play the market, in hopes of finding some bargains after the first wave like they did last year in defensive end Jeremy Mincey.

I don’t know if active is a good word,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “I think active can get you in trouble in free agency. I think you have to be efficient and look for your values, and you can do good things.

“We did it last year with a player like Mincey where we got a lot of great value out of him. But at the same time, we’ve been in situations where you have to pay too much for players. You got to be very careful there. We’re certainly going to be that way. We’re going to look to be efficient. If that proves to be productive then that would be good.”

That dovetails nicely with the idea that running back DeMarco Murray would offer some degree of discount to stay home, and the Cowboys would love to drive the price down as far as they can for the reigning offensive player of the year.

“It’s one of those situations where you get down to the wire like this and free agency is right around the corner, it’s tough for a player not to want to look and see what his options may be,” Jones said. “At the same time, he understands the business of football that we can only do so much at each position. We’ve got to, at the end of the day, decide how we want to divide up the pie. Of course, we certainly want to give a nice piece of it to DeMarco.

“But we’ll just see how that works out. We really feel like we have a great relationship with DeMarco and his agent Bill Johnson. Certainly no guarantees, no promises that he’s going to bring offers back to us. But at the end of the day, I do think he wants to stay in Dallas. I know he knows we want him here. Hopefully we’ll have good communication as we move forward.”

The might, but the biggest communication is pretty clear — the Cowboys don’t plan to break the bank for Murray, or anyone other than Bryant.

Journeymen level of additions have often proved to be productive for the Cowboys. If realistic, strength in a rotational sound group makes a lot of sense as well as doable with concerns of cap developments.

Great, the most valuable team in all sports wants to shop at Walmart

They are taking this Frugal Freddie stuff too far. Mincey was good last year , but so was Selvie in 2013.

Suhs and Hardys don't hit the FA market very often

I think the Cowboys are going to go after Hardy, we've always been a sucker for troubled players trying to rebound....

This tells me that I need to start preparing for the doom and gloom comments on CZ when FA starts next week and the Cowboys don't sign 15 players within the 1st 2 hours.

If we sign one premier pass rusher, I wont mind if we look for bargains elsewhere. If not, the offseason will be a failure.

the so called walmart shopping has gotten them to this point, it was the Macy shopping they have done in the past that had killed them. Dallas has done a great job of putting a team together I think they know what they are doing.

Yes when the deal was favorable to the Cowboys. It one thing signing Ro McClain but Dallas did so on a 1 year deal 700,000. if things had gone south we were not on the hook for much.

The off-season is long and no one knows the results until Jan/Feb. I'm sure most thought last off-season was terrible. That got us to 12-4 and playoff win. I look forward to 2015 and hope they keep doing what they have done lately, it looks to be working.

I think this is what we will do because we know how to do these "risk" deals and entice a player to sign. Think about this, two fliers we have taken on name players in the last five years, Pac Man and Melton, what did we actually pay out. Jones signed a non guarenteed contract and the trade we made we got our pick back, Melton made I believe the league min in 2014. Jones knows how to entice a player like that and protect himself.

The downside is those moves havent really worked out on the field

If we are willing to give MURRAY 7-7.5 million as rumored then ap if he restructures a new deal is well worth that price. If that's considered a "value" move.

It'll be even worse when the comments are how signing the 2015 versions of Nate Livings, Brodney Pool, and Mackenzy Bernadau are incredibly smart signings by the Front Office.

I don't need us to sign "15 players within the 1st 2 hours" but that doesn't mean we have to sit out free agency either. Getting better is all I care about.
