Trevor Lawrence isn't worth Trevor Lawrence money. As is being discussed elsewhere, this contract gives the Jags a 3 year window. After that, they are toast.

Unfortunately for Dallas, they are already toast because they rolled so much money into void years. Dallas is into the "pay the piper" section of inflated QB salaries.

Just in general, I don't understand all of the comments saying that Dak can't win without a good team around him while also suggesting that he gets a contract that makes having a good team around him impossible.

Here’s another fan who blames the entirety of a teams failure on the QB not taking into consideration the players around him. It boggles me daily.

You said name someone who got a 2nd big contract after getting over on Jerry the first time around….does that not qualify?
2nd comes after 1st.

Romo didn't get a 1st big contract.

Romo's first extension was signed in 2008. It made him the 18th highest paid QB that season. Right behind Jamarcus Russell.

@baltcowboy , since you tried Romo too.

It's like Dak's people didn't see his performance in the playoffs. He's not so vital to the Cowboys' future that they can't move forward without him. If Dak wants to continue being the Cowboys QB1, his management is blowing this big time. Trey Lance is a very real alternative to starting Dak. Every preseason TD Trey gets is another leverage point Dak loses.

Prescotto got his bag and beat up primarily Dog teams and choked in the 3 playoff losses.
This is TL's first bag and it's debatable if he is worth this type of cash.
You cannot compare these QBs as they are in different career situations.
Is @Captain-Crash OK? Don't think I've seen him around for a while.

@baltcowboy , since you tried Romo too.
His first start came the following week, on Oct. 29, 2006; a year to the day later, he agreed to a contract that gives him the third-highest annual salary for an NFL quarterback, behind only Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer.

Why do you lie?

Is it really that serious?

There is no leverage to lose. If Cowboys don't want Dak a much better organization will.

Here's another article:

Romo replaced Drew Bledsoe at halftime of a Monday night game against the New York Giants last October. His first start came the following game, on Oct. 29, 2006; a year to the day later, he agreed to a contract that gives him the third-highest annual salary for an NFL quarterback, behind only Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer.

Where did you say he was the 18th highest paid on Overthecap?

Mike Florio's article about Prescott’s pending negotiations is intriguing.
It paints the picture of the Cowboys FO having no / little foresight in drawing up their quarterback's current contract back then, while the agent for Prescott clearly laid forth a solid plan that not only rewarded him these past four years, but also sets the player up for a second lucrative deal - be it with the Cowboys - or another team in 2025.
Nothing intriguing there.
We all knew that.
Stephen was an idiot and wanted Dak to "prove it". So they tagged him.
Dak got seriously hurt and the team was awful and then made a mockery of themselves; folded giving the agent everything he asked for.
The agent was right to say hey you made us eat a franchise year and that was your 5th year on the deal.
We know when the TV deal is done and want to come back to the table again in 4 years.

Under no circumstances has QB pay declined and under no circumstances should you hesitate to sign a guy you will pay top 5 money to even if he breaks his leg.
It was literally insane mgmt.

Florio is literally goofy.
Of course, the 55M AAV matters.
Trevor is a significantly lesser QB to Dak.
The 12th best (PFF rating) QB making 55M makes it painfully obvious that Dak is headed to 60+M here or elsewhere.

My bad... I think it was sorted wrong.

I was looking at the cap hit.

It looks like 2007 (6th) and 2010 (8th) were the only season Romo was a top 10 cap hit among QBs.

That's what I was looking at.

Better than Dak... Romo was never the highest paid. Both times Dak has come up for contract he's requesting highest paid each time.

Cowboys playing checkers
Dak's agent playing chess.
We will never win anything of significance until we have professionals running our front office.

Jerry won't get fooled twice by the same player.

You can burn him once on a bad contract.

For as flawed as he is everywhere, the one place he is pretty good at is not allowing a player to burn him twice.
Most people reference other contracts as the “leaves” Jerry is waiting around to fall.

Partially.

The big “leaf” to fall is Trey Lance. Can he play? If he can, then you can go younger, cheaper, with more upside at QB, sign your other superstars and not get taken to the cleaners twice by Prescott.

But if Trey can’t play— hard to see this FO not caving when they have done so with Zeke, D Law, Dak last time etc…
