Phillips vs Bennett

Its still early in his career and he is one heck of a blocker.

The receiving part should be the more natural thing for him.

The light bulb will pop on for Martellus eventually. It may not happen this year but it will happen.

The fact he protects the QB so well is reason enough for me to keep trotting him out there.

Is he the RW11 of TE's?

Its a much higher priority for a TE to be a great blocker.

The way he carries himself off the field wouldn't suggest that he would bring it like he does but he takes pride in his ability to block.

If he is a willing blocker then that says a lot about the guy.

I don't believe that either. Jerry said is was for an "impact" player. Chris Henry wasn't someone who was going to walk in here and make a big impact.

And quite frankly at this point I'd contemplate the 4th by itself.

In reality I have no idea what was offered. I am just tired of people who have no clue saying it was a first rd pick like it was gospel. He has been a little bit of a disappointment but his role in our two tight end sets has been effective enough to help power us to 6000 yards of offense this year. He is a baby (only 22) and will get better in time.

I'm hoping for bigger things from Bennett, but let's face it, we've gotten a lot from quite a number of players. Spencer, Free, Jones, Austin, Witten, Crayton, Ware, Jenkins,Brooking and Romo have all contributed in significant ways this year, and there have been others who have quietly done better than in the past. Carpenter, Davis, Spears, Hatcher Ball, Beuhler, and our Special Teams unit (Thanks, Coach D!) have all made a difference from time to time. Patience seems to be Wade's hallmark. Let's see what the playoffs and the 2010 seson have in store for Bennett, among others

And John Phillips is providing just as much value if not more to this point.

And I don't see what everyone is basing all of this upside on except for one preseason. Its not like he was a monster receiving TE in college, and everyone is just assuming his athletic ability will someday translate. Guess what, doesn't always work out that way.

Right now the only thing he has going for him is one good preseason and a lot of media hype. I'd trade that for a 2nd or 3rd right now, especially with the emergence of Phillips.

Until Bennett shows that being a football player comes first he should stay on the bench. I do not give a crap about how old he is. I could care less about his so called potential. FACT IS that Phillips is contributing MORE when it COUNTS.

Jerruh and Wade need to have a sit down with him and ask him what he wants to be more: a football player or a celebrity.

I'd rather have Phillips as the number 2 TE. Upside schmupside.

Phillips catches the ball when it's thrown to him. Bennett doesn't.

Phillips, he's hungry and he aint droppin $!#@!

How about the block that helped spring MB 111 on the 1st cary of the game. They showed a replay from behind Barber, and he looked like Moose getting in the hole, and crushing the backer. Give me Phillips.

I saw that block and was like, holy crack this kid is the next Witten.

What about the turn around catch he made on the Romo throw that was behind him.

It was a fabulous body twist and it really showed off how much core strength the kid has not to mention decent hands in corralling the ball.

Yup, even more Witten in that play, Phillips > Bennett in performance and in potential.

Stolen from another board.

Rookie stats:

Martellus Bennett:
20 rec, 283 yds, 4 TDs

John Phillips:
7 rec, 62 yds, 0 TDs

(and by the way, here are Marty B's stats for this year)

15 rec, 159 yds, 0 TDs

I still want Marty B.

you put this thread to sleep for 3 days with that post.

Bennett will either be fine by the end of year 3 or 4, or he wont' be and will be gone.

Phillips look pretty Ok to me. Won't be a bad thing whoever ends being the guy that sticks around.

Color me a Phillips fan.
