Phillips vs Bennett

Something that is being missed here is the kind of passes that are being thrown to each. We know Bennett can catch, we saw him do it his rookie season and it was some of the incredibly acrobatic receptions he made last season (and a couple this season) that give people confidence that he will be a heck of a player and probably pretty soon.

So far this season I've seen Phillips getting balls either in the flats, on the line of scrimmage, or 5-6 yards downfield. I haven't seen him have to beat coverage: hes uncovered. I haven't seen him have to come back on a deeper route: he doesn't ever go deep.

Bennett is giving blocks and making the catches that he makes in coverage, I saw a pass play this season where he came down with the ball despite being blanketed by a CB and a safety. That's the sort of respect hes getting from D coordinators and it's the sort of respect that Phillips simply isn't getting.

Give me Bennett, once he figures out how to reliably catch the ball in stride he'll be a hell of a player for us. He has all of the talent and measurables, things just need to click that tiny bit more. Also, that doesn't mean Phillips won't be a good player too (hes probably a better receiver than hes given credit for), but he won't be as good as Marty B.

Who do you want as our 2nd tight end?

Mods please create it into a poll if you see fit.
Bennett.....

he is a better blocker as a TE. he is more athletic. he is got more upside. Phillips is a fighter, good blocker, but not very athletic and the one thing he does better than bennett is play as a lead blocker in a FB, HB role in the back field.

Stolen from another board.

Rookie stats:

Martellus Bennett:
20 rec, 283 yds, 4 TDs

John Phillips:
7 rec, 62 yds, 0 TDs

(and by the way, here are Marty B's stats for this year)

15 rec, 159 yds, 0 TDs

I still want Marty B.

Wait, so the 3rd string TE has less catches and yards then the 2nd string TE? Wow, case closed...

Phillips didn't even get a look until Bennett got the concussion midseason. Comparing their cumulative stats is pointless.

Hey can you get the drops stats up?
