Phillips vs Bennett

I've been a big fan of Bennett, but had an awful game on Sunday. He seems to not be progressing much....sucks b/c having quality depth behind Witten, especially w/ 2 good TE's helps A LOT.

Concussion caused Marty B to forget how to catch.

Marty has far more upside. TE is a tough position. Anyone expecting great things early is really unreasonable.

I said from day one that Bennett is a flake and will never get what it takes to be a professional football player, I'd put him on the trading block after the season

I have not believed it once. It amazes me how things get reported and then taken as the gospel.

Jeez Louis.

You know, I really like the Phillips kid. You would think as Dallas fans we would have learned our lesson about our premature judgment of players. Cough cough Jenkins cough cough Spencer.

This is far from over, but heck as long as one of those TEs turns out we are good.

...then you might be totally ignoring what the 2009 Cowboys are about.

It's not potential and upside that has made this team. If that was the case we would still have players such as Stanback hanging on.

At some point you have to be able to show consistency and the ability to perform your job.

That's what Phillips has done. Maybe Bennett can get this game figured out, but if you guys are serious about cheering the Cowboys on to the Superbowl it's high time you thought about cheering the players who are actually performing on the field.

As so many of the posters here like to chime, "You don't win the Superbowl in the offseason." Well you don't win the Superbowl on potential...you win it on performance.

Phillips is contributing. The kid catches the ball when he is targeted. He does a respectable job blocking. He's on special teams.

What more would you want from a guy backing up Witten and is typically the third option?

I wish there were more like him.

if Bennett had a yard for every tweet...

Doubt he'll ever pan out he's to busy with his pathetic attempts to milk his fame.

Give me Phillips over this clown any day until Bennett puts at least half the effort he puts in to twitter into football

Marty B has more athletic ability yes...but let's not forget that he is also our best run-blocking TE.

I don't see anything wrong with the way they are using both of them now

anyone that says Phillips has no clue..Now hear me out before you jump all over me..

Bennetts UPSIDE is 1million times HIGHER than Phillips, the question asked who I WANT to be the 2nd TE. If Bennett is the 2nd TE through and through, it will mean he is at least coming close to tapping into his potential.

HOWEVER, if Bennett keeps on keeping on and Phillips continues to improve, then Phillips deserves it. But I WANT Bennett to emerge..

What about Phillips for the rest of this year since Martellus has had a chance to show something but hasn't. Give him another shot next year, we can't afford any brain farts from here on out

I think Inmanroshi said he knew this guy since high school and basically thought he was a joke and would never amount to much of a football player.

I was excited about Marty B. at the beginning of the year. He brought mismatch possibilities the could be exploited. Here's what it boils down to between Bennett and Phillips.

When I say there names I say Marty B. and John Phillips.
One wants to be Hollywood, the other wants to work hard and put food on the table.

Marty B. isn't catching with his hands. Phillips does everything you ask him to do.

I wish we had made that Cincy trade.

Went and watched Bennett's ustream for the first time today.....Seems like a guy that just doesn't get it.

Was it ever confirmed for sure who the player was and what the pick was?

Todd Archer's chat alliuded to it being a 2nd:

Who gets shipped in offseason, Tashard or Martellus for draft picks?

Todd Archer:

I don't know if they trade either one of those guys. I'd tend to doubt it. There's too much value in keeping them. Now, if Cincy wants to offer that No. 2 again for Bennett, I'd listen this time

Martellus has been in the NFL for nearly 40 games now (including preseason). I think it's way past time to be making excuses for him.

I've got to tap the breaks on this one. Our offense is a timing offense in which Romo requires absolute trust in his receivers for that pass catcher to thrive. By no means am I ready to cast off Martellus after 32 (ahem, regular season) games.

At this stage, he's currently a pint-sized version of Roy to me. I think his talent is immense, but he's got to figure out how badly he wants this thing. Like with Roy, I don't know that he's doing less than the minimal that is required, but I'm not sure he's putting in the overtime hours required to become a master of one's craft.

Goodness gracious. The guy is only 22 years old! 22!

I'm not specifically aiming this at T-Ro, but I've gotta say that it is silly to make such harsh judgments about a young developing player,

Let's not forget that until this season's Kansas City game, many fans here were convinced that Miles Austin would never be anything more than a spare part.

One of the ways that good teams get better is by patiently helping young players to develop their potentials. It worked with Austin. It worked with Romo. It is working with Free. It could work with Bennett. Time will tell.

But Bennett is clearly a work in progress. Fans who do not recognize this aren't thinking clearly.

When unrealistically optimistic expectations aren't quickly supported, some people reflexively jump to the opposite extreme. It is wiser to try to keep things in perspective. Especially with a player like Bennett.

And, finally, taking pot shots at Bennett's personal character says less about Bennett than it does about the people who are taking the pot shots.

I'm absolutely fine with Bennett getting a demotion right now, during crunch time, if Romo and the coaches have less confidence in Bennett than Phillips. But it is crazy to dismiss Bennett's longer range potential in the process.

He was taken a round higher than Jason Witten, who produced immediately and by his 2nd season, he was the go-to-guy. People say Bennett is more gifted than Witten, yet he's unable to show a tenth of it on the field. I agree completely with whoever said the guy is more focused on becoming a celebrity. If anyone follows him on Twitter, you know that all he ever talks about is his stupid rap group - rarely football. I was shocked to see him post something about being division champs. Even the craziest of NFL stars on Twitter (Ochocinco, for example) still tend to focus on the NFL and the weeks game. Phillips really made some clutch plays in the Saints game - ones that I think Romo wouldn't have trusted MartyB to make...but that's just my take. He could also be more banged up than we're lead to believe. That concussion could have been more severe because he does seem a little ********.

Not Bashing Bennett, I just dont get where everyone is saying he's such a terrific athlete. I havent seen that at all. Think he tops out as a VERY GOOD blocker and an O.K receiving threat. I dont feel he is ever going to be a fluid athlete/receiver type. Bad NFL body. Not proportioned. Very Oxey/ almost clumsy when he runs. Im sure others have noticed this also. Just not put together right to ever be a top athlete.

I was really hoping/expecting that Bennett would be lights-out this year, he seemed primed for a breakout especially in an offense like ours which utilizes plenty of two tight end formations.

We would be scaaaaary on offense with another strong possession receiver or another pass-catching TE, which I was hoping Bennett could be.

Good thing is he's still young and has plenty of upside.
