Chad plans to push the pink envelope

Posted by Mike Florio on September 30, 2009 7:18 AM ET
The uniform-obsessed NFL is permitting a significant deviation for Week Four of the 2009 season.

As recently reported by Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, players will be allowed to wear pink cleats and/or pink gloves to promote breast cancer awareness.

In Week Four, and presumably only in Week Four.

And, of course, Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco sees this as an opportunity to push the individuality envelope. He has indicated, Twitter style, that he plans to wear pink shoes and gloves for the entire month of October, and to supplement them with a pink chin strap and a pink mouthpiece.

He also says that he'll match any fines imposed with a donation, most likely to breast cancer research groups.

Given his specially-made cleats and orange chin strap and "Ocho Cinco" name plate and the change his name to "Ochocinco" to circumvent the rule against using anything other than his name on his name plate, Chad craves to be different, and he plans to take full advantage of the tiny crack in the door that the NFL is providing by kicking it all the way in.

And so the NFL faces a real dilemma here. If the league office repeatedly fines him for blending pink with orange for the entire month of October, the league office might look like it's bullying a guy who is merely trying to promote breast cancer awareness.

So stay tuned.

Meanwhile, Jensen has an updated item that addresses the extent to which Brett Favre and other Vikings players will be wearing pink shoes on Monday night.

"He's tough enough to wear pink," Deanna Favre, a breast cancer survivor, said of her husband.

"There's nothing he wouldn't do for me, so he's helped so much through my cancer and through my treatments," she said. "He was very supportive, and he continued to treat me like a wife, not some sick person."

So it's great that the league is doing this. And, as usual, we can count on Ochocinco to make it even more interesting.

The real question is, if Ware breaks out with 3 sacks this week, does he wear the pink cleats all season? He wore torn jersey last year for good luck as well.

I think only in week 4 are the players allowed to deviate from the team colors to honor this event since it is an NFL sponsored deal.

Chad Ochocinco already said he would wear it all month and would risk getting fined to do so, saying he would match the fines with a donation to the fund.

Thank for the good info. I did not know that cleat-color was considered part of the uniform. It's a good gesture by Ocho and it sucks that the league would penalize him for it.

Ocho is a goon. If he follows through and donates his fines, that'd be pretty cool.

I hope they fine the heck out of him because he is going to match the fines with a donation. (But yeah, in principle I agree with you.)

I just with their was another way or color they could use for this. it's gonna look so stupid seeing these guys in pink cleats and wearing pink gloves and stuff like that.

i think this is great, i would have liked to see reebok send shoes to the whole team. or even going one further, let them do custom uniforms, nothing crazy, but like maybe have the pinstripe in the star pink or something like that..

it supports those fighting cancer and i think that does alot more then money does.. it would be great if teams gave pink shirts at the entrances, or sold them for cost, and pinked out the whole stadium. i would love to see that.

And this is one of the reasons why I have never had any issue with putting up with the crazy nature of Johnson. The dude is a good cat at heart and I like this gesture.

I also love that many players around the league will be doing this for at least this week. It's a fantastic cause and I applaud the effort of all who are involved in it.

I'm most likely in the minority but I like Chad I don't find most of what he does wrong and as BraveHeart said he's a guy with a good heart so if he's willing to eat the fines and match with donations I say go for it

I doubt the league will fine him though it would be some horrid PR to fine a player for wearing the pink to support a GOOD cause and not just their own ego

I'm betting Goodell not only fines him, he bans him from the NFL for 2 years.

They threatened to fine Jake Plummer $30,000 for wearing a helmet decal honoring Pat Tillman. I really wouldn't put it past them to fine 85 a good amount of money.

they should fine Bobby Carpenter for tarnishing his long-haired tribute to Pat Tillman.

They should fine him for impersonating a football player.
