Jerry Rice. Without question.

The Cowboys had actually targeted him, but the Niners traded and jumped in front of them to pick him in the draft (per Gil Brandt).
We got the fragile Mike Sherrod instead.

Mike Singletary

Darrell Green

Zach Thomas (the young version)

Wes Welker

Drew Brees

LaDanian Tomlinson

Those come to mind immediately. Needless to say, I loved San Diego's draft in 2001.

John Elway.

I heard a radio interview with someone who worked for the team back then (might have been Gil) and what he said was that the Cowboys were in talks with Baltimore about getting John, and when the conversation was over, we believed it was a done deal. However, we were talking to the #2 person in charge, while the #1 person in charge (owner, maybe) made the deal with Denver at essentially the same time.

Lance Alworth...even though we got him late in his career, it would have been great to have him for a longer period of time. I idolized the guy.

And I always wanted John Mackey too....Pettis Norman was, well, Pettis Norman..although I do think he had tons of potential but maybe wasn't targeted much in Landry's offense.

I wanted the Cowboys to go after Steven Jackson in the draft that Parcells took Julius Jones.

Heard that. I was pissed when they didn't select him. But, in the end, the trade (aside from Julius) was a good deal.

Anquin Boldin comes to mind.

Ray Lewis brings a fire that I just think is contagious and reverberates throughout your team, same with Singletary. Lawrence Taylor brought a fury on defense that I've never seen the equal of ... I love that.

I just love the way Troy Polamalu plays. It's exactly the way I want my safety to play, he makes things so much easier on the rest of that defense. I always loved the toughness Hines Ward brought to the WR position. In a day of WRs being a bunch of prima donnas he is anything but.

Pretty much I love old school tenacity, fury and toughness.

If the Cowboys would have picked Rice, they never would have taken Irvin. In addition, had they taken Rice and been a better team with Rice in his third year, they may not have had the first pick in 1989 to draft Aikman. It all worked out for the best in the long run.

My pick would be Moss, not only because he is/was such a phenomenal talent but also because we wouldn't have had the need to trade away two first round picks for Galloway.

I heard the same story on John Elway....and he's the one guy I'd put on this list.

But it's funny.....Would we have won those SBs in the 90s with him? Would he have given Landry a few more winning years?

I think more relevant would be players we could have had a chance at that we wanted at the time...

Wanting a player later for their production makes it easy to cherry-pick...

Good point. Randy Moss.
