Why would you pick a WR from the same draft class as our HOFer Irvin? Wasn't Al Toon also in that 1988 class? Might be mixing him up with another player.

I'm surprised nobody picked the one guy I would think you'd have to consider the biggest miss.

Montana.

He was drafted in the 3rd RD in 1979. Now I have read what Schram had to say about this.
Montana was the BPA on our board, yet we went for need with TE Cosbie. For the record, I loved Cosbie and think he was under utilized in his time here.

Either way, can you imagine Montana with a year behind Staubach? White still takes over in 1980. But you now have Montana learning and pushing White. OMG, the 1980's would have gone in a whole new direction.

We went to the same school at the same time.

I'll tell you a narrow margin and a wide miss. Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus were picked right before the Cowboys picked Craig Morton. Butkus at 3, Sayers at 4, Morton at 5.

Why couldn't the Bears need a QB? Even if they had they would have taken Namath.

Imagine Gale Sayers paving the way for Dorsett. Those who never saw Sayers run missed out.

I'll stick with players we could have picked, I wanted us to pick, but we didn't:

Keith Brooking - I was so hoping we would take him instead of Randy Moss in 1998 and then we took Ellis instead. Ellis turned out to be a pretty good player but Brooking was special and I am glad we finally did get him.

DT Shaun Rogers - When we passed on him to take Quincy Carter I was pissed but when we still had a shot at him and took Tony Dixon instead I went ballistic!

Guys I liked but not sure we ever had a shot at were:

Jack Lambert - The guy should have been a Cowboy!

Mike Singletary - Great player, great leader, and would have fit perfectly into Landry's defense.

Paul Warfield - I used to dream about Hayes and Warfield playing opposite each other.

Leroy Kelly - We actually could have taken him in the 1964 draft but took HB Al Geverink instead. We are talking about the 8th round here too! He would have been a great pairing with Don Perkins in the backfield.

Steve Largent - Just a guy I really liked.

More recent since my memory sucks:

Steven Jackson
Robert Meachum

Oh, and Jason Witten would be on the list had he not miraculously fell to us. I kept hearing how the Eagles would take him in the 1st. Then he fell to us in the 2nd and we went in another direction... I nearly died. I was so sick I turned the draft on and went drinking with friends. I came home later that night and saw we somehow got him in the third. Unbelievable.

Ed Reed for sure. As great as Roy was his first 2 seasons, imagine how much better Reed might have been learning from Darren Woodson early in his career because Ed is actually a student of the game, unlike Roy.

My only question here is that I remember seeing something about how he was very lazy when he first got to Baltimore and Ray Lewis had to take him under his wing and show him how to work and get him in the right frame of mind to be the player he is.

Now Woodson might have done that for a year here but after that he was hurt and then retired. I really wonder if a guy like Reed, if he really didn't have the work ethic when he first came in, would be a great as he is now without going to the right team.

I love this pick. Reggie White was a beast.

A lot of what I would have said is already here.

Jerry Rice
Randy Moss
Reggie White
Patrick Willis
Stephen Jackson
Steve Smith

A little thing about Steve Smith is that he was a pet cat. LOVED HIM coming out of USC. I said from day one that Smith was the better receiver than Jarrett coming out that year. My best friend, who is a Giants fan, and I talked a bunch prior to the draft and I said every time that I wanted to snag Steve Smith in that draft. I just felt like he was a clutch receiver in the making.

When the Giants got him I was really sad. I called him, he was at work at the time, and immediately said "Dang it. Now I've got to spend the next 10 years watching him beat up on Dallas."

I'll also admit here that my two worst draft days were when we passed on Moss and passed on Jackson.

I really almost cried when we passed on Moss cause I just knew if he fell to us that day that we'd get him. I loved the guy coming out and I thought with Troy, Irvin, and Emmitt still there that getting Moss would have squeezed out 1 more Superbowl from the group before it was all over. I was crushed when we didn't draft him.

Now don't get me wrong I always enjoyed having Greg here. Over the years I grew to really be very fond of him as a Cowboy but I was just crushed that day when we passed on Randy Moss.

With Stephen Jackson I was PISSED. He was the guy I wanted more than anything that year. I knew we had to be going RB and Jackson was the back I wanted so bad but I figured there was absolutely no way he'd fall to us. Then we he did I was sure he was going to be a Cowboy. When they traded down and we missed him I was so angry. Then when we wound up with Jones I was furious. I was so pissed cause I'm a fan of Notre Dame (2nd favorite college football team behind the Huskers) and I'd seen Julius play plenty. He was the second best RB on his team, IMO, at that time and we passed on Stephen Jackson, who was a stud, for the second best runningback at ND. I was so angry.

Larry Centers.

I just thought he was a tough guy who was also very versatile. I know he could not match Moose as a blocker, but he could do everything else and was a leader. He would be great in the current offensive system.

Back in 2004 I wanted Kurt Warner over Vinny Green Junk. I was thrilled when he was hinting he wanted to come to Dallas. Even more thrilled when we were interested. Then Big Bill had to get one of his guys and I was sick. Jerry gave him Vinny even though he wanted Kurt.

No, I am not guessing.

Which players have you wished had been Cowboys? I always respected/ admired some players and wished they had been cowboys. Some examples are Ronnie Lott, Brian Dawkins, and Ray Lewis. Which ones if any do you guys have?

I think more relevant would be players we could have had a chance at that we wanted at the time...

Wanting a player later for their production makes it easy to cherry-pick...
Agreed, trick. So w/ that in mind I'm thinking...
Randy Moss!
-To this day I imagine what our offense would have looked like with him donning the Star opposite Irvin and w/ Emmitt & Troy still in the backfield! Explosive. Dynamic. Unstoppable. Championship caliber. As we witnessed many times ourselves when he lit us up, he was truly a game-changer!
