If Dallas decides they want to upgrade CB this is how I think they should proceed:

1. Cut Carr (after June 1st) and save $8 million for cap in 2015.
2. Pray like heck Claiborne can become adequate as his contract is guaranteed for 2 more years.
3. Sign either of following FA CB to replace Carr:

* Cromartie (Arizona)
* Braylon Maxwell (Seattle)
* Kareen Jackson (Houston)
* Chris Culliver (San Fran)

There are other stop gap CB available (Rashean Mathis, Tramon Williams, Brandon Flowers and of course Darrelle Revis).

I agree with this. We all know our window is closing since our Super Bowl chances rest on Romo's shoulders. With that said, we have a late 1st round pick. There aren't many guys you can draft with the 27th overall pick who will immediately step in and play like a star. We're used to drafting in the middle of the 1st round where you're more likely to get Day 1 starters. So I don't want to rely on a late 1st round rookie at a key position. I think we're set at LBer pending on who we bring back (and of course health). I think we need a lot of help on the D-line and secondary. We really need a starting caliber CB. We only have one in Scandrick. I think Moore is a solid 3rd/4th corner and I trust that Claiborne can be another decent 3rd/4th corner now that we're not expecting him to come in and be a starter. So we really need another starter. I don't want to put that burden on a rookie's shoulders. Give me one of the guys you mentioned and I'll be comfortable with our CB situation. That still leaves a ball hawk FS as a need. But I think a FS could be someone we draft in the 1st since we won't need him to come in and start immediately (see what New Orleans did with their 1st round safeties. They gave them some time on the bench to develop but they contributed well off the bench as rookies).

As always, it will come down to dollars. I'd like to add Cromartie or Maxwell, but they're both probably going to get big money.

I wouldn't be opposed to keeping Carr barring he takes a pay cut. He really impressed me the last few games of the season. I think our CBs would be much better if we played to their strengths (man coverage), provided a pass rush, and gave them a security blanket in a ball hawking safety.

For those in the know about contracts...

I know we can save 8mill by June 1st cutting Carr....

How much will say a Maxwell, etc... be expecting this coming offseason??

Typically there are are 100 players in each draft that are capable of starting day-one. I see no reason why Dallas doesn't go into the draft with the idea that all three of their top picks (preferably defense) cannot potentially start right away.

I also see no reason to consider the opportunity window for the Cowboys as closing thus forcing them to go after specifically veteran FAs.

carr will likely take a paycut.
i dont think we make any big moves at cb this year.

draft a guy mid rounds maybe to compete and grow.

now the following season i could see a total reboot with mo off the books and carr more affordable to release.

cutting carr now would be very expensive and he played well the final month and into the playoffs.
it wasnt his man beating us in the playoff games.

with moore and patmon depth is good at CB.

i think thats the wrong position to look at.

I guess what I meant was, I don't see a 27th pick rookie being much better than we already have. We already have some young potential in Moore/Claiborne/Patmon. And we have a star in Scandrick. Carr is iffy. He played the end of the season like a solid starter but he's been inconsistent for the past two years. I think he'd be good enough to keep if he took a pay cut. My point is, I don't see a rookie coming in and being what we need. As far as D-line or ball hawk FS, since we currently don't have anyone who fits those descriptions, I think a rookie would be perfect.

Yup, CB would be a crapshoot after the top twenty. I'd look for a mid-level CB, though, that could push for a starting job rather than a proven starter.

the 8mil in savings is somewhat misleading.
Yes we would remove his 8m in base salary as now signed but no one expects Carr to get that 8m, not even Carr himself.

if we cut Carr post june 1st we eat 4.2m in 2015 than 7.4m in 2016.
so basically we move that 8m additional cap hit to 2016 and also need a starting CB.

Or if we simply do a doug free style restructure with carr we pay him 3m SB, 1m base and 3m base in 2016 all fully guaranteed.
his cap hits become
2015 6.2m instead of 12.4m
2016 8.2m instead of 13.8m
He could be cut in 2017 for 3.7m dead money PRE June 1st. No hits in 2018.

as to part 2.
It is hard to say with Maxwell et al. Each player is a bit different. Maxwell is on a very good team in a situation you gotta buy him out of.

Starting CB get about 6-7m per year.
Any of them in their primes would want about 30% of the deal guaranteed.
Say 5 years, 33mil with 11m guaranteed.
Maybe10m SB, 1m first year base guaranteed. cap hit of 3m
yr 2 4m base, cap hit of 6m
yr 3 6m, 8m
yr 4 6m, 8m
yr 5 6m, 8m

if he lasted through year 3 you probably do a scheduled restructure where you hand him 5m as a SB and take base back to 1m.
