Are their contracts up? We'd have to get permission to talk to them otherwise.

Not for a move UP the coaching ladder. NO team holds a possition coach back when they can get a coordinator job unles they ponny up and promote the coach themselves.

That is incorrect. The NFL (in situations like this) recognize Head Coaches and assistants. They do not recognize rankings such as Coordinator, Secondary coach, Lineman coach, etc...

So if it's not for a HEAD coaching job, you can't talk to them.

It used to be the way you're saying, but coaches started giving their assistants the "Assistant Head Coach" label meaning they couldn't interview for a coordinator job cuz it wouldn't be viewed as a promotion.

I believe you are correct -- however, many teams will grant permission for promotion interviews -- you would only run into a real issue if a guy like Phillips got the job here and wanted to bring in one of the guys above as his D coord. Then the Chargers might balk as they'd be losing two guys on that side -- much like how Bill wouldn't allow Sparano to leave with SP.

Also lots of assistants work on year to year deals anyway.

uh, i hope this speculation is to help the next chosen coach and not someone jones should hire. if he were to hire any assistant before the HC, the screams would be for the control freak jones to let go and let his HC make the picks.
