Possible future QB more important than 1 game

Romo was an UFA and no one ever declared Romo the next "one." Our owner has told us Dak was the best QB drafted this year and had some of us believing Romo may never see the field again.

We were also critical of the top drafted QB's after the pre-season and were quick to judge. Now we want to tap the brakes. And I was guilty of that as well. I liked what I saw from Prescott but what I saw initially were poise, touch and accuracy. And poise is a very subjective thing to judge, but not the other two. I saw one (poise) out of three but that's not enough.

We could have lost yesterday but I wanted to see something more from my future franchise QB. I said before the season started that the thing we need to know by the end of the season is if this kid is the next one. I think the Eagles got a glimpse of that yesterday, win or lose. We did not.

*we*? im sorry if you were busy listening to the hype machine of casual water cooler convo - but that doesn't make it true. *we* were never quick to judge. *we* also say many people say "hey, it's pre-season, calm down" and now you want to put those voices away and focus on those who were blowing him out of proportion because of some pre-season success.

talk to *those* people cause *we* did no such thing.

again - couple of TD's dropped and a defense that could rush and/or stop the run, we win. as for the eagles "glimpse" - isn't that rush off to judgement way too soon again - appearing to be done for no other reason so you can feel better about rushing off to judgement not so long ago.

just strange, to be honest.

Deep throws were terrible. Either behind or out of bounds. Checked down too often. 3rd and 12 and checked down to jwit and the giants blitzed everyone; he had Dez in man.

He played well for a first timer. Bease should have had a TD.

People got their panties tight, Dak was good for a rookie but he was just OK. The game reminded me of Weedens in ATL last year with the check downs
Exactly a dink and dunk effort is not impressive at all imo. Wentz performance was impressive. Can't wait for Romo to get back...what is this teams record when he is out...

It was the game plan people. If this kid had been drafted in the 1st, nobody would be jumping ship after a single game.

He has everything it takes to succeed. He just needs time. Freaking bipolar fans to think 1 game makes a career. Wow...

"We" as in most people on this board, including myself. I don't say one thing then change my opinion when it suits me. Now, if you went on a sabbatical during the pre-season and were unaware of the common theme on this board, then I'll apologize in advance. Yes, "we" were quick to judge and compared Dak to Wentz and Goff who was ridiculed for being #3 on the depth chart. Our owner declared Dak the best QB drafted this year and "we" bought it because we saw a glimpse of it.

Strange that you would deny the praise and euphoria surrounding Dak around here but maybe you didn't have internet access where you went.

Really the only real concern I have which I haven't seen mentioned is the way he throws the longer distance balls. He trends to float them, a lot of times also throwing off his back leg. His balls tend to spend a lot of time in the air. I'm concerned that this will equate to it's down the road.

If Dez and Bees catch 2 balls that they dropped then we win and everyone is on the Dak train.
More play action and bootlegs, get him outside where he can put pressure on those corners.
I thought he looked fine, better than any Qb not named Romo we have had in years.
Zek is the one that showed less than needed. Free looks old and slow.

no - i was here and i saw it. i also was in the "slow down" crowd and there were many of those too - but they don't illustrate your point as well so we'll put them away and tell them they must not have the internet where they are.

Giants ramped up their pass rush in the 2nd half and it affected Daks performance. If you're going to ask a rookie QB to throw 45 times how bout some designed roll outs and a few bootlegs to slow down the pass rush? I think the coaches let him down in this respect.

As a Romoholic I would be ecstatic to see this young man take the mantle over from the old pro

Why do some people insist rooting for both is mutually exclusive? The only bias I have is for the STAR.

cause usually how people feel is more important than how things are.

Dez's TD drop is that simple. It was an extremely contested catch. Bease had a true drop.

Dak showed signs of being the future franchise QB for the Cowboys.

I was more concerned about the QB than I was about winning 1 game.

Many QBs have come to the NFL with the required physical tools but few have the mental-makeup to be great players. Dak showed excellent mental-makeup.

He needs to improve his accuracy. He has shown that he can make the throws but needs to do it more consistently. He appears to have decent mechanics so improving shouldn't be that difficult.

Improving accuracy for a guy with decent mechanics should be easier than trying to change a player's mental makeup.

Most QBs the Cowboys have tried to develop failed due to their mental-makeup not from a lack of physical ability.

Weeden - Slow witted. Didn't want to get hit.

Quincy - Self explanatory.

Henson - Couldn't deal with mistakes. Weak emotionally. Lacked top competitiveness.

Hutchenson - Zero pocket awareness.

Several others - Couldn't make good decisions quickly and/or under duress.
Watching him his footwork in the pocket needs to be more consistent, but thats something that will come in time.

The Giants defense could wind up being cery good this year. They have 2 CB capable of Pro Bowl level play and Darien Thompson was impressive even if hurt. With almost 700 pounds of agile DT's in the middle and two quality edge rushers, they could have a top 5 defense this year

As much as i like Dak- i thought he was very average yesterday. Lets not look at it with rose colored glasses. He was fortunate to not have any turnovers and he took almost zero chances- way too many checkdowns for my liking

That may be more about the coaches not wanting him to do too much. The game-plan yesterday looked eerily similar to the ones we rolled out last year. I think they will open it up slowly for him until they feel he is ready to shoulder the load.

This is a good piece and I agree completely. My only concern is that if he is in fact our future than he will be stuck with and inept coaching staff and GM

QB is the most important position on a team...by far. I thought Dak was fine yesterday for a guy making his first start as a rookie.

Although, I am tired of our fans and mostly our front office hyping up guys after guys, year after year telling us this "guy" will be great, only to see mostly disappointment. Our front office needs to have a very critical eye to Dak (Is this something they can do or something we can have confidence in?). He is not going to be a top 10 QB this year and he should be far from a finished product, but Dallas needs to use an objective and critical eye to see if Dak can be a potential top 10 QB over the next 2 years. If they come to an answer of no or if there is doubt, they need to continue to look for that QB.

We tend to put the horse in front of the cart every year. I am just tired of it and feel like we are getting further from being an elite team as the years go on. The sad thing is with the exception of an outlier in 2014, we have been as mediocre as mediocre can be. It just really sucks when even when you are mediocre, you feel like you are still continuing to lose ground to your competitors.

My only complaint is that i'm afraid this offense and coaching staff is protecting him from himself. He needs to be able to take some risks and play aggressive. Let him get a feel for the game.
Which is exactly what was feared. The lack of innovation to use his skill set was a little alarming. When Linehan said he was running their scheme without any special tailoring, he was not kidding.

He took a few shots. I don't they are going with a Weedenesque gameplan. Honestly I didnt have much issue with gameplan, it didnt work because we were playing what could very well be a top defense this year and they played very well. They seemed to have the deep ball defended well. With there LBs the short and intermediate passing was there to be exposed and we had a few misfires there

Only issue I had yesterday was the coaching staff. Sorry, this kid looked great to me out there. He was handcuffed by a coaching staff that simply does not
know what it is doing.

Prescott played well for a college kid playing in a home opener in Dallas. Heck, he, well the team, could have won that game. There is hope going on with or without Romo. Prescott will get better game after game.
