It is widely believed that America got it's name from Italian Explorer and Cartographer Amerigo Vespucci (the Latinized version of His 1st name is Americus), however, many scholars have questioned this. While it was common for Lands newly discovered by Europeans to be named after People, they only used 1st names for Royalty, for ordinary Folks it was Surnames only.
An alternative theory is that it actually got it's name from Richard ap Meryck (His name was Anglicised to Amerike), a prominent Welsh Merchant who funded John Cabot's (Giovanni Caboto who was actually an Italian) expedition in The Mathew.
Which of these theories is true (if, in fact, either are) is an ongoing debate.
