I am disappointed that he apparently is being given a free pass at one CB slot while Brown and Scandrick are apparently battling it out for the other outside CB slot at this point.

This part I agree with you on. I think Scandrick and Brown are our best corners and should be the starters unless someone can beat them out.
 
Further, we aren't a total zone team ourselves anymore and the idea we are going back to playing predominantly zone defense appears to be more myth than reality. I believe our base pass D is now Cover-1 and has been the predominant scheme we've used while sprinkling in Cover 3. I found a chart from Sturm for the 2015 season and we played Cover 1 (man) almost 50% of the time. That didn't seem to change a lot in 2016.

I think we'll be using more Cover-2 this year because our personnel fits it better. Heath is more of a coverage safety than box safety and our corners all can play zone while Carr and Claiborne were far more comfortable with man. I don't think Marinelli wanted to be a primarily Cover-1 team but adjusted for the personnel we had. Those three players leaving gives him the chance to finally put his preference in place.
