None of these celebration rules speed up the game. In fact, they slow the game down. The play clock keeps running while a guy is celebrating, dancing, spiking the ball or whatever. The clock only stops when a penalty is called and then the ref has to re-set the clock. If a player or team wants to waste their time celebrating after a 1st down instead of huddling up and getting ready for the next play that is up to them. They may not be ready for the next play or even earn a delay of game penalty. Take another 5 seconds off the play clock and maybe you can nip celebrations because coaches really will be pushing for their teams to huddle up and get prepared for the next play.

You positive on that? Because when the ref can't get the ball and place it for the snap then the clock will stop.

(1) The Play Clock operator shall time the 40/25-second intervals between plays upon
signal from game official(s). The 40-second interval is to start when one play ends.
If certain administrative stoppages or other delays occur while time is out, such as
change of possession, team time out, Referee’s time out, injury, measurement,
or any unusual delay that interferes with the normal flow of play, the 25-second
interval is to be used (even if the 40-second clock was already counting down). The
40/25-second clock is to start when:

(a) neutral zone starts with Referee’s whistle (3-18);

(b) Referee’s whistle indicates that play may start following any time out.
If the ball is not put in play within this time, he sounds his whistle for the foul and
the ball remains dead. When the foul is prior to a snap, defensive team may decline
distance penalty, in which case down is replayed. See 14-6-Exc. (4).

They need to have a penalty for defenders when they celebrate over a lil tackle. I can see if it was a HUGE hit.. but no they celebrate for the little things. Get back to your huddle and play the game! As for the spike thing.. I see nothing wrong with it.. just don't go overboard.

So they allow the Greenbay players to jump in the stands ...... but they think spiking the ball is hurting the game ....

When did they move the stands on the field of play?

Let's get rid of players high-fiving as well, cause that takes up time.

The NFL seems to be striving towards the NBA's standards in terms of regulating its players and it's very annoying.
The NBA should get rid of all the hand slapping after every free throw attempt. Who started that ******** crap anyway?

That's not what he was suggesting. He was simply pointing out the inconsistencies within the NFL's rules...I think. ;)

that spin thing is cool. julius does it all the time. they are ruining the game with all of these new rules
Yeah, stopping the throat slash after every tackle just killed the NFL.

It was a stupid comparison so I gave a stupid reply. Touchdown celebrations and spiking the ball after a three yard carry while the clock is running don't compare.

I really don't think it means spiking the ball in this context. They don't stop the playclock and then start it at :25 when someone spikes the ball.

I like any rule designed to make the game move a little faster. This seems a stupid way to do that -- it doesn't happen that much and the gain you get is tiny.

you can make the game move faster by shortening the un-Godly long commercial breaks

Depends on the official. What may be an unusual delay to one ref, may not be one to another. I have seen guys spike the ball during a two minute drill. For the most part, I don't see the refs stopping the clock in these situations because of it. And they shouldn't. If the guy wants to waste his teams time, he is only hurting his team.

I remember seeing interviews with Bronco's receivers. They talked about they never left the ball on the ground or tossed it to the side during a two minute drill. They had lots of confidence in Elway and wanted to make sure he had plenty of time to come back, so they would had the ball to the refs so as not to waste time off the clock.

Are they serious how about stopping high fives hugs and butt slapping aswell lets prevent players from enjoying themselves and expressing their enjoyment why no stop them being upset when they lose aswell then we can get on with watching an official putting his hands in the air and then go to a commercial sounds good to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure the NFL would survive if they eliminated every stupid, selfish, "look at me" celebration after a play.

How do I know this ?

Because I grew up watching it that way.

Nobody will quit watching if they make this rule stick.

If you never let it start, then you don't have to deal with trying to scale it back when it goes too far. And trust me, eventually it will go too far.

Football is why I watch, not for the celebrations.

I agree, but celebrations are apart of what makes the NFL so fun to watch

Yeah, cause players didn't celebrate in the 60s, 70s, and 80s....wait, yes they did. What are you talking about?

Meh spiking is not what angers me, its that stupid *** spin the ball move that the Giants think they have patented. They do it after every play and make sure its right at the face of the defender that tackled them or is on the ground. I thought they had made a rule where that was considered taunting but I guess that didn't work at that well. I do not mind the spinning occasionally but after every play is stupid.
