I think back to my rural hometown from my childhood whenever mental illness is discussed. My hometown was small but had two full-time mental health clinics open Monday through Friday. The plaques on the clinics' entrances said they had been built during the 1950's.
Even as a child without a full understanding of their necessity, I would pass by them and sometimes ask myself, "Why does this small town need a mental health clinic? And why two?"
One of the clinics had to close in 1981. The other clinic hung on until 1984.
It was only after occasional crazy crap began popping up around town and within the surrounding parish in subsequent years that my question was answered. Nothing on the scale of the Uvalde tragedy has ever happened there yet. Thankfully. However, it would not surprise me if it would eventually happen either. Not one bit. Sad.
