Putting to Rest the Arkansas Connection

I'm tired of every media outlet assuming that Jerry will automatically do whatever it takes to trade up for McFadden simply because he played at the University of Arkansas.

I did a little research and here's what I found:

Jerry purchased the team in 1989.

From 1989 - 2007, there have been 44 Arkansas Razorbacks drafted.

Jerry has drafted ZERO of them!!!

Why don't they predict that teams such as the Bears(picked 4) or Bengals, Broncos, Cardinals, Chargers, Eagles, Falcons, or Steelers(all picked 3) will pick McFadden...they seem to have a bit of a love affair with U of A players?

In the following years, there were ZERO Razorbacks on the active roster:
1989-1999, 2005-06...that's 13 out of 19 years that no one from the University of Arkansas has been on the active roster.

The illustrious group of former Hogs who spent at least some time on the roster:

C Earl Scott (1998) - signed as undrafted free agent from World League; cut in preseason; on injured reserve in 1999; never played for Cowboys
QB Clint Stoerner (2000-2) - signed as undrafted free agent; played in 5 games in 3 years.
RB Chris Chukwuma (2001) - signed as undrafted free agent after Tennessee released him; never played for Cowboys.
WR Anthony Lucas (2002) - drafted by GB in 4th-#114 in 2000; Cowboys drafted Kareem Larimore at #109 instead; signed as free agent in 2002 and was active for 1 game.
LB J.J. Jones (2001) - signed as undrafted free agent; released before season started.
DT Jermaine Brooks (2003) - signed as undrafted free agent, active for 2 games
WR/S Tom Crowder (2004) - signed as undrafted free agent; active for 1 game
LB Tony Bua (2005) - drafted by Miami in 5th-#160 in 2004; Cowboys drafted DB Bruce Thornton at # #121 and TE Sean Ryan at #144 instead; signed as free agent in 2005; never played for Dallas
S Ken Hamliin (2007) - drafted by Seattle in 2nd-#42 in 2003; Cowboys drafted C Al Johnson at #38 instead; free agent acquisition who played in 16 games last year for Dallas.

In total, not counting Ken Hamlin, former Razorbacks have played in a total of 9 games(one of which was a playoff game) in 19 years!!! How's that for Hog love?

This post is in no means meant to belittle that college or the players who played there, but simply to show how few players from a university so close in proximity, not only in distance but also in historical relationship perspective, have been a part of this team since Jones bought it. Sure, he will give a shot every once in a while to highly thought of players who were undrafted or perhaps released from another team, but Dallas is not U of A south like most media types would have you believe.

When is the last time Arkansas had a player of Mcfadden's capability available?
A top 10 pick? Oh, about 10 months ago.

To the NFL networks credit, they did mention that Jerry has never drafted a player from Ark and there have only been a few FA's from Ark here under Jerry.

I've been saying this for over a month.

But, the sports media would rather ignore the truth in place for something that sounds good.

See the quote above.

Anderson went #8. Fog clearing? :D

I think the point was that Jamal Anderson is no Darren McFadden. Not even on the same planet.

I don't think anyone is saying that Jerry is going to draft a player JUST because he played at Arkansas. I think the point they're making is that due to Jerry's Arkansas connections, he's very familiar with McFadden and watched him and cheered for him many times.

I've personally seen Jerry Jones hopping around and high fiving everyone after a big McFadden run. He knows the player. He knows that he's special. He won't fall for any of the Mayock nonsense about him going down on first contact.

I would think that scouts watch most of the game film and general managers probably don't dissect 10-12 coaches tape of every player under consideration. But Jerry has seen McFadden that many times, even more often in fact... and that's due to his Arkansas connections.

McFadden may end up going 4-6, just a couple spots ahead of Anderson. Take that for what it's worth. Also, if I had neither a DE nor a RB, I'd take a top flight DE over a top flight RB any day.
