QB Trey Lance reached agreement with the Chargers

If Herbert goes down the Chargers will go nowhere. They’ll then go with the QB that give them the least chance of winning, but most beneficial draft position.
True.

I wish Jerry had listened and done the same last season. Cowboys could and should have been drafting top 5 in every round, instead of at 12th spot.
:banghead:

He faces an uphill battle for sure. But the kid has talent. If only he could have played a couple years of higher level college ball, things might be completely different.
He broke his hand, then his leg.

Harbaugh likes the kid.

Our team is cap broke.

Good luck to Lance.

Trading for Lance is one of the worst trades that the Cowboys have ever done, Cowboys could have used the 4th round pick last year
No, we've made some real bone headed trades before.

Sure, if we weren't going to use him, having the pick would have been better.

I guess we have different definitions of playing time. Yes he will warm up before each game. Fans will see him do that. I don't count that as playing time.

Playing time is in a real game. Not in a scrimmage on a Wednesday with the Chargers. Not in intersquad practices and not in pre-season games.
You are dead wrong about pre-season games. Herbert will not play a down, and they will split time between their 2 backups competing for official QB2 status. As long as Lance is on the team, this will be the scenario...100%, no argument on your end otherwise they don's sign him. Admit it or not, backups see all the playing time in the pre-season, in order to learn the condensed playbook or to at least get the rust off in case their name is called. Scrimmages/warm-ups of course mean nothing, but playing time in the pre-season is essential. Do you not agree that if Lance excelled during the pre-season audition he had with the Cowboys that he would have been extended? He was not good, they let him go it's as simple as that

What are you not understanding? I don't count pre-season as playing time. You can if you like.

Undrafted players also play in pre-season.

Well that is fine, but in the end it is the only measure of a position battle that coaches have....and in all likelihood, our QB2 will be based upon their pre-season play unless Jerry brings in an Andy Dalton vet.

Yes, they measure nothing at practice everyday. You are correct.

Lance left because Dallas couldn’t afford 6.3M for a QB2.

But they can afford 1M for Grier.

That is worse.
“Up to” $6+ million means it will require he start a significant number of games. The Chargers extended Heinicke through 2026. Do you believe they’ll give starts to Trance just so they can pay him lots of money?

And how low do you think the Cowboys are right now to not be able to afford an incentive laden contract for 6.3M? The team is not “cap broke”. They are just poorly managed.

He could not on the field for the Cowboys when Dak went down with an injury. How is he going to see the field on a team with Herbert at QB and a QB2 with significant NFL experience?
Again Jerry was the factor so all logic goes out the window. Can't even argue it

Weaknesses

  • Disturbing lack of placement and timing as a deep-ball passer.
  • Completed just 38.6 percent of his throws beyond 10 yards (per Pro Football Focus) in 2023.
  • Struggles with anticipatory throws, running receivers into collisions.
  • Telegraphs throws between the hashes, giving safeties an easy jump on the ball.
  • Desires to throw the ball through receivers rather than deliver with touch.
  • Inconsistent tying his feet to eyes and squaring to his targets.
  • Frequently forces moving targets to break stride to try to make the catch.
Wow . . . our QBs are twinsies
