Detroit drafted undersized Dizon in the second and then traded back up with us in the 3rd to pick up Avril. They obviously had a need at OLB, so could Carpenter be trade bait? We drafted and signed 4 DEs that can be converted to LB and will get a chance to see if they can replace Carpenter's production this weekend.

Now that the draft is over, it should be easier to project who is going to be cap casualties and which positions teams still have need. Detroit may see that trading a whiner for a 1st next year and Carpenter, plus signing a potential cap victim is much more attractive now than when they had a talent board in front of them.

I'm sure I'll get roasted for this, but it is a serious question about a rumor. That's why I'm asking. Buddy of mine gets sports talk out of Dallas and said some guy named David Smoat (sp) has a Sunday evening talk show and the Sunday night after the draft, yes after the draft, claims the Roy Williams WR to Dallas is by no means dead and he believes Dallas/Detroit are still working on something. To my question. Has anyone heard this, heard of this Smoat guy or have any info to the contrary or the same. Thanks for any responses. Flame on for me keeping up the RW to Dallas stuff.

Your buddy is correct. Talks are still ongoing. It doesn't mean anything will happen though. I still have my fingers crossed.

Stephen Jones seemed to indicate that they had talks but Detroit was asking for something unreasonable. Remember last year when Jerry said he had the chance to go up and get C Johnson but Detroit wanted way too much and we later found out they asked for either Witten or Ware. I got the impression that Detroit again asked for a 1st and a player we were unwilling to give up. I highly doubt a deal will get done because they would have wanted the pick on Saturday instead of next year. That being said, I still believe a good vet WR will be available just before camp starts. I think back to recent guys like Branch and Chambers being moved. Someone who drafted a WR this year will want to get a pick for someone at some point. There are surprises every year.

BTW, there are people here who can confirm I told them this. Friday before the Draft Detroit called Jerry. Not Jerry called them.

I have no details about what they are asking for nor what we are offering at this point.

Even when the Draft was over I posted a couple of comments that the deal was not dead. That's exactly what I have been told. "The deal is not dead yet."

Next year's first and second are worth the same as this year's second and third. You wouldn't give up Martellus Bennett and a third-round pick for Roy Williams? We will have a ton of picks in Rounds 3-7, so we'd still have the ammunition to trade up into the second round if we want someone there.

As far has his contract, the Lions are almost certainly going to franchise him next year, so you'd still be in the same situation if you wanted to get him.

WAY too much! A first is stretching it...personally I don't think its ever worth it to trade a first rounder away (especially a year out), I could see it being ok in this situation but would be leery. A 1 and 2 would be too much though.

its definitely worth it if they 1) can get him for the season and 2) believe there is nobody in next years draft anywhere near as good as him and 3) believe he is the longterm answer as a goto WR after TO is gone

What say after June 1st we give them Marcus Spears and Bobby Carpenter for Roy Williams. Sounds like an even trade to me.

They need a DE and a LB, both are young and cost is reasonable. Both are better in the 4-3 and face it neither is probably going to start for us and could be off the roster come next February.

Ok, I've changed my opinion on this subject.

At first I thought it was too high a price to pay a #1 pick for a guy that's going to be a FA in all liklihood next season. However after thinking about it and realizing the Lions do have the option of franchising him, (even though that doesn't make sense economically for them), and their is no guarantee we would get him in FA because of the ridiculous $$ teams would likely throw at him if he reaches FA, I agree with Adam that I would give up a #1 and a #2, (if it came to that),in next years draft for RW.

If I were Detroit I would hold out for as much as Jerry is going to give up. After watching him fold to the Titans when the ONLY guy he was bidding against was himself and it was clear that the Titans weren't going to keep him around Jerry made them an offer they far above what his original intentions were and they laughed all the way to the draft.

Now, don't get me wrong, if this whole Adam Jones thing works out we got a steal, BUT the fact that Jerry wasn't in a bidding war with another team and buckled shows that he is working, almost, from a desperation stand point.

The Lions may as well let Jerry stew on this on this one for a bit until he just explodes from the anticipation. It's no secret that Williams has been Jones' target since the very first day of the off-season. Now that the Lions have made it known that Williams might be available for a "real" deal, then all they have to do is sit and wait until Jerry, once again, folds.

The only other concern is the fact that the Eagles have two 1st rounders next year and are in desperate need of WR help. It's not typical of the Eagles to get loose and gamble with draft picks, but the leverage that they have with those picks and the fact that a division that they finished last in, the previous season, hasn't gotten any weaker may indeed prompt them to dazzle the Lions with an offer they can't refuse and Jerry can't match.

Interesting to say the least.

I think the Lions will want a king's ransom even if they don't plan on signing him to another contract next year or a franchise tag.

I mean wasn't it last year when they said we could trade up to their spot but they wanted picks along with Ware or Witten thrown in.

Now just imagine what they would want for Roy Williams.

I will be happy if we do trade for him, but I think Mongo will want too much and it never gets done. I think our best bet is to get Roy Williams as a FA IF they don't franchise him next year.
