This is by far and away my favorite uniform combo of all time, and it wouldn't hurt my feelings in the least if they'd of made it their "home" look.

That's the original "jinx blue" jersey.

Uh, it would be blasphemous to bring that back, especially at home.

Pugh was a very solid DT...doesn't get the credit he deserved...there was another DT that was very good but had a very short Career with the cowboys by the name of Betha...

Morton threw a pretty pass (like Bledsoe) but he lacked "it" and would make some real boneheaded plays

Walt Garrision perhaps Dandy Don put it best if you need three yards give it to Walt and he would get you 3 yards and if you need 10 yards give it to Walt and he would get you 3 yards...

Lilly in my opinion was the best DT EVER

Great answers from all and I agree.
I just want to add that Walt Garrison was a warrior, blood & guts. He had no fear. If you think Emmitt playing with a separated shoulder was coragious. Walt would have played with 2 separated shoulders. I really believe he would.

It is funny because when he was a rook or around that time Dandy gave him a rather bad nickname.

I can not stress enough for people who have not read Walts book to go out and read it.

Yep and it was funny reading in Garrisons book how he, Lilly, was always snapping pictures and at times players found it annoying.
Garrison also said that Lilly kept most of those pictures and Walt wound up using a few for his book.

Sorry to get off the subject, but check this out... Bob has some good pictures too... Neat site...

He did return to play in a game with a broken collarbone... I don't remember the game... Tough son of a gun, YESSUR!

No doubt about it. Walt was one tough SOB but then again you don't ride on the rodeo circut in Steer Westling events in the off-season if your shy of pain.

1. Nobody has mentioned that Jethro actually suffered frostbite in his fingers and toes in the "Ice Bowl". That may explain why Kramer got such a good block. Oh and by-the-way, if you watch the tape very carefuly you will see that Kramer got an early move on Jethro before the ball was snapped. No it wasn't called. (Somethings never change).

2. The most amazing thing about Morton/Staubach was that in those days you just didn't substitute players unless they were injured, and QBs played the whole game. Landry was the first coach to start calling plays for his QB and I think that, in large part, was why Don Meridith quit. Meridith was a tough dude too, and I've seen Tom Landry (or was it Bod Lilly) say he was the toughest player he ever saw. But Morton just didn't have the mobility of Roger, nor the leadership, not the insane competitiveness. But Morton later had a good career w/ Denver, although Roger beat him one last time in that '78 SB.

3. Nobody has mentioned that Walt Garrison was a bull (and/or) bronc rider in the rodeo circuit in the offseason, so you know he as tough.

4. Bob Lilly. Well, you've read all the above posts and all of them are true...

Yea, I guess if you're a subscriber to the magic 8-ball and horoscope faction, then the "bad-luck blue" would be a problem for ya.

Me, I outgrew that kinda nonsense about the time I was able to successfully master the bend-over-and-wipe.

Ok, the season is over.

We're re-re-re-re-hashing how much we love/hate Parcells. It's getting a bit old.

Around the time I started lurking here, there was an old-timers thread where younger Cowboys fans asked questions to this forum's AARP elite. :p:

Anyway, I thought I'd start another one....see if any of you fogies are around. I'm 25 years old and have been watching the 'Boys since Herschel Walker....and so I failed to witness some 20 years of Cowboys history.

At the same time though, I got some nice Cowboys history reading lately, and while listening to Brad Sham and others talk about some of the good ol' days/players, it's always fun to hear other opinions.

So, with my longwinded introduction complete, I've got some questions for the Cowboys old-timers. Answers are much appreciated.

1) Jethro Pugh. I hear a lot about him, but he's not even on profootballreference.com. Can anyone tell me why he's so popular amongst some oldtimers and give me some frame of reference on the guy?

2) How crazy, for the fans, was the season where Morton/Staubach were splitting snaps....in the same games. I can't imagine this happening, and am curious as to what the fan reaction to it was? It seems so insane. Furthermore, was there a large contingent of fans rooting for Morton over Staubach?

3) Who the hell was Walt Garrison, and why is he seemingly irrelevant to all Cowboys lore, and yet he does car commercials now? I have zero frame of reference on the guy.

4) Bob Lilly. Is he as great as people say? Or is his status partially due to simply being the face of the early franchise?

I'll leave it there now. Thanks :)

My question to them is what is burma shave?
And what was the big deal about Mamie Van Doren?
And was the Edsel a misunderstood car?

And calf roping. My uncle put together a rodeo event for a County Fair here in Texas and I got to meet Walt and see him perform in the rodeo. I knew the Dallas Cowboys were never thrilled that Walt was doing this but they should have known when his signing bonus was a horse trailer and his scholarship at OSU was a rodeo scholarship. :laugh2:

depends on how old you are and what you remember.

The "blue jersey" curse seemed to become untrue after the Landry era into Jimmy's time, so I don't believe the curse anymore, but it was absolutely true in the 70's and early-mid 80's........in fact I remember when we played the NFC Championship at Philly....at the time Philly always wore its green jersey's at home, but made Dallas wear the blue for that game....we lost 20-7..........so anyone old enough knows that the "blue-jersey" curse was hardly nonsense back in the Landry era.

Not a subscriber. That's just what they were known as, not that it was true. But, I still never liked them. The dark blue ones we wore in the early 80's looked nice. But I've always had a preference for the white - especially at home.

This I didn't know. But I heard Drew Pearson telling Brad on his pre-PO game show that his signing bonus was $150, and he wanted it in CASH. So whoever it was (Tex or Gil Brandt) took out his wallet and handed him $150.

Drew also told his wife he "got $100 bonus". Drew was a smart cookie..

the Burma shave I believe from listening to Abbot & Costello (still available to hear on line if anybody is interested) was about a shaving cream

Mamie ("the Blonde Bombshell") was the third of the sex kittens in the 50's Maryiln, Jane mansfield and Mamie...she was very nice...

the edsel I can't help you with

So, there's no accounting for the fact that the blue jerseys were worn about 1/8th the time as the whites, since 80% of the rest of the NFL wore dark as home jerseys, therefore making it an average of about twice in any given season that they'd make an appearance? Sorry, but superstitions, curses and the like are for girls, and the weak-minded, which catagory do you fit in?
