Nice write-up. I really hope you are right, but I just don't get the same feeling with him as you do. Not that I am calling him out as a bad pick or anything, I just can't find anything t get me excited. There are tons of players who went the JUCO route and had success, but in general I look at it as a red flag. That being said, the most telling thing for me was trading up for him. They clearly didn't want to risk not getting him. Someone on the Cowboys saw something they liked a lot. The funny part about him is there is a whole boatload of Cowboy fans pencilling Deuce Vaughn in as a can't miss Sproles type player who is going to be a huge boost t your team and very little talk about Scott, but the team took Scott first and clearly liked him better on draft day.

I just get so excited to hear about and then see all of the young/new guys but I don't pay attention to much and certainly not the compliments literally everyone gets until at least Training Camp and then more during the preseason games. Go Cowboys!!!
It really is the heart and work paid for through leadership that matters. I was on the Texas A&I Javelinas, who was in the NAIA. It consistently put top players into the NFL as All Pros as well as Hall of Famers.

This will sounds weird but when these guys do interviews, I like for them to sound a certain way. He has a strong voice, not a nice voice like hey man I'm going to water your plants after practice, but it's more like DAMN THEM PLANTS, do it yourself!! Lol
Strong voice or strong words? Mike Tyson had a very weak voice, but strong words. Like “I’ll rip your baby’s heart out and eat it”. Lol

Cowboys DC Dan Quinn on CB Stephon Gilmore: “When we (traded for him), I bet I got 10-12 calls or texts saying, ‘DQ, this is your kind of guy. You’re gonna love this guy.’ That told me a lot. And then in the first interaction, just knowing how hard he works at it and then seeing the connection with (Trevon Diggs) to start and then with some others, that was a big deal for me. (It says), ‘Not only do I have all this knowledge, but I’m willing to share that wisdom.’ That’s a really important thing for coaches to do, but also for veteran ball players to do if they have that ability to share.”

How many CB's will Dallas keep? IMO Bland, Gilmore, Diggs and Lewis are locks. If Scott plays well, I would think that either Wright or Joseph is gone.
I think Wright is gone for sure. Just have not heard any good things being said about him. Joseph at least got some praise for his play in the slot in minicamp.

One thing I want to point out about Scott receiving first-team snaps at outside corner instead of Joseph. It could mean nothing more than they wanted to see how Scott would handle it, which is what Quinn indicates. Joseph already has done that before (and didn't handle it as well as Scott apparently has) so there was no reason to stick him out there instead. Joseph is going to have to earn the trust of the staff because he hasn't shown he deserves it yet. Moving to the slot and getting a little praise there is a step in the right direction, but we'll see if he can keep it up.

Also, I'm not as sure as you about Lewis being a lock. He's set to start out on PUP and be one of our highest paid corners this year. If Scott and Joseph look like the team can depend on them, then Lewis becomes expendable, maybe even becoming trade bait for some team that needs a third corner. Of course, that's a big if for Joseph.

Diggs, Gilmore, Bland, Joseph, Scott and Goodwin could be the corners we keep, especially since Mukuamu also showed some ability to play the slot in the playoffs. Lewis also doesn't fit the profile that Quinn looks for in a corner.

As some of you might know, I have been excited about rookie Eric Scott out of USM, and I picked him as my favorite pet cat. I really like his mental makeup as well as his physical traits. Al Harris made note of the fact that Southern Miss used Scott in much the same way that the Cowboys will ask him to play. That man coverage experience, along with his mental ability and his “Quinn type” frame helped me get pretty excited for his chances. Oh, and he has good ball skills and has always gotten his hands on turnovers, which as we know is just something a guy either has or doesn’t have. It can’t really be coached into a player if he doesn’t have it.

This is yet another positive article on Scott since the draft. Just because someone writes that he’s looked good in OTA’s… that doesn’t mean a whole lot. However, when everything you hear about a guy in the offseason work is overwhelmingly positive, it absolutely is a good sign. Like last year with Bland, all we heard was good things about him, and by the time Oxnard rolled around it was easy to see why. He played very well from the first preseason game on. There was never any doubt anywhere that Bland was a great 5th round find.

We haven’t been able to see Scott play in the preseason yet, but otherwise, what we’re hearing parallels last year with bland. And actually, the team has had Scott playing with the first team defense more than Bland did last season. It is definitely a good sign for Scott but he will have to show it in camp once the pads come on.

What I find interesting about this article is the Dan Quinn quotes. In it Quinn says:

"We intentionally took them out, took out Diggs and (Stephon) Gilmore, and sometimes I want to see how guys are going to respond," Quinn said. "Young players, are they going to get tight in there with the starting group or are they going to rise to it? Put him in, see what he can do."

"What we are generally looking for with a player coming in, when you're in line and you're kind of counting reps, 'OK, I think I can go here,' but when you see a guy wanting the moment to go and compete and knowing like, 'I'm balling my fist up. I ain't leaving here,' that's what I'm looking for. Especially for the rookies to have that kind of attitude to say, 'I'm here. I ain't going nowhere' kind of mindset," Quinn said.

"Attitude is really what it takes for young players to assert themselves into these moments because that responsibility is real, to say, 'Hey man, can we count on you when it's there?' and them learning to do that early on. That's a big deal to say, 'I'm down for this count. You can count on me to get it done,' and I've seen that from Eric so far.

"He's just one of those guys, 'I'm not leaving. I'm going to do my thing
.'"

Again, this doesn’t mean a whole lot on it’s own but it is just another piece of good information pointing to Scott being a player in the secondary. In the article, it talks about him already being in front of Joseph and Joseph being moved to the slot, which just shows a little about how the coaches are viewing Scott at this early point.

So, yeah, it is a great sign for Scott that good things keep coming out about him and of course Quinn practicing him with the first string defense is a positive development.

I’m hoping he keeps up the good work and can follow up this outstanding spring/summer with a nice, Bland-like training camp. If he does hit like Bland, this cornerback group will be very, very good and will be set up for the foreseeable future. Diggs, Gilmore, Bland, and Scott would be fantastic. All 4 have ball skills, all 4 have length… it could be a joy to watch.

With the secondary making the QB hold the ball for a beat longer, the defensive ends will cause chaos at the QB. Then, if Mazi and the DT’s can push the pocket, not allowing the QB to step up… it could truly make for a devastating pass rush.

Scott just has to make it happen.

Yeah, that’s why I was saying that the compliments themselves don’t mean much. However, after years of being a huge draftnik and NFL fan, I’ve just noticed that when a guy gets a lot of positive talk from media/team mates/coaches, it usually means good things for the young guy. When information on a rookie from the mid to later rounds comes out in the rookie mini camp, OTA’s and veteran mini camp… there is a correlation with him being better than expected. Like Bland last year… although Scott is getting even more positive comments than DaRon did.

Of course it means nothing at this point, but it is certainly a positive sign.

And speaking for myself, I liked the pick before any information started coming out on him. His mental makeup and his physical traits make him a promising 6th round pick IMO. I liked that Dallas will ask him to do similar things that he was asked to do at Southern Miss. when you’ve seen the guy using similar techniques and playing like you’ll use him… it typically makes the evaluation easier.

Anyway, I’m not guaranteeing that he will or won’t do anything. I just liked the pick and things are leaning in a positive direction at this admittedly early point.

Yeah, they obviously aren’t going to make Scott a starter over Gilmore or Diggs. Quinn just wanted to see what he did with it and liked the reaction he got from Scott.

Just another positive comment on a guy that is getting a lot of them.

Joseph must still be getting outside work. McCarthy claimed that he thought that Joseph is learning how the positions work together and it's improved his play on the outside as well.

hopefully he is our Bland of 2023
Maybe so. I certainly hope so. However, to expect him to be as good as Bland is probably too much, although it is possible.

Bland was a ridiculously good pick and is already a really good player. He was good from the first PS game and played like a vet the first time he was asked to play in a real game.

5 INT’s is just crazy for a rookie 5th round pick.

It it way too much to ask Scott to be as good as Bland, who is a terrific player. We can hope, but should not expect it.

Overall I’d say that I hope you’re right, but also hope we don’t get to find out this season. A few bad things need to happen for him to see significant time at CB in 2023.

Based on what Broaddus said, plus the fact that they were willing to dip into next years resources to get him, it sure sounds like they see him as a guy whose best ball is directly in front of him. Kudos to the scouts if they were able to pick that out, but I’ve seen too much of this in my day to be happy beyond Missouri style just yet.

I gotcha. That’s understandable.

I don’t expect him to (or want him to) really play this season either.

for whatever period , our secondary was inadequate- forever , after Darren retired.
thank Quinn for improving that with bringing in players and drafting well . Our pass rush is also as good as better times , so the combo - combined with better interior Linemen should be equal to one of the better defenses.
now I pray the offense rises up to the challenge and win a championship.

The pass rush definitely helps the secondary.

Scott was on my list of players I'm most interested in seeing during camp/preseason. The team is clearly high on him.

So nice to have good depth in the secondary! The defense was really good last year, and could be even better this season.

I didn't mean to indicate that he wasn't, just not with the ones like Scott was getting. I think Joseph is also getting some looks with the safeties as well, so at this point we seem to be looking for what he can do best. I think he's just a slow learner who really didn't have that much experience coming out of college. Whether he'll learn enough to be a quality NFL DB is the question. Lining up wrong or taking chances when you have no safety help are sure ways to have a short NFL career.
