Good write-up, OP. Honestly, I saw Tolbert trash Scott, I saw a guy shy about tackling as well at times. Also, I saw some good traits. Interesting to see how this guy does in preseason and TC. I'm not expecting anything close Bland, and I hope Bland takes a leap this season.

Gilmore
Diggs
Bland
Lewis
Joseph
Scott Jr.
Wright

3 locks and 4 guys (bolded) going for 2 spots. Should be a fun battle.

One or two on the practice squad as well...that is a team strength for sure.

Overall I’d say that I hope you’re right, but also hope we don’t get to find out this season. A few bad things need to happen for him to see significant time at CB in 2023.

Based on what Broaddus said, plus the fact that they were willing to dip into next years resources to get him, it sure sounds like they see him as a guy whose best ball is directly in front of him. Kudos to the scouts if they were able to pick that out, but I’ve seen too much of this in my day to be happy beyond Missouri style just yet.
What is it that Broaddus said? I don’t think I read or heard anything from him about Scott.

To be honest I don’t really listen to Broaddus much…

I didn't mean to indicate that he wasn't, just not with the ones like Scott was getting. I think Joseph is also getting some looks with the safeties as well, so at this point we seem to be looking for what he can do best. I think he's just a slow learner who really didn't have that much experience coming out of college. Whether he'll learn enough to be a quality NFL DB is the question. Lining up wrong or taking chances when you have no safety help are sure ways to have a short NFL career.
The safeties thing was the media not knowing what they are talking about. Joseph has done drill work with the safeties and Bobby Belt was told that Jourdan Lewis did that as well in years past.

Scott is already older than Joseph for you guys who worry about age. The age might be a good thing. I was not impressed with his tape because receivers tended to get behind him. Then I just saw Cooks blow by him at mini camp. The coaches seem to trust him so we will see. Hopefully he can become another Bland.
first off, ive seen wrs like cooks blow by EVERY DB out there.. also Bland got burned more then few times last year deep, diggs was suspectable to the fake pump and goes got beet.. so lets give that a break. All dbs get burned.. can he make enough plays in between to offset those plays.

i remember when MI would make sanders look bad.

It really is the heart and work paid for through leadership that matters. I was on the Texas A&I Javelinas, who was in the NAIA. It consistently put top players into the NFL as All Pros as well as Hall of Famers.

John Randle
Darrell Green
Gen Upshaw

They were all Javelinas.
didn't Cam Newton take the hard route juco and then landed at Auburn?

In his 14 games at Auburn, Newton threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns with 7 interceptions and a 66.1 completion percentage. He ran for 1,473 yards and 20 TDs and 5.88 yards per carry. With 50 total TDs, he averaged 3.6 per game.
thats a pretty nice road traveled..

Maybe so. I certainly hope so. However, to expect him to be as good as Bland is probably too much, although it is possible.

Bland was a ridiculously good pick and is already a really good player. He was good from the first PS game and played like a vet the first time he was asked to play in a real game.

5 INT’s is just crazy for a rookie 5th round pick.

It it way too much to ask Scott to be as good as Bland, who is a terrific player. We can hope, but should not expect it.
I don't disagree

Who is the backup at slot?
Not one player outside of Lewis has any real slot experience. The eagerness to get rid of him when we have no proven slot depth behind Bland is dumb if not in the event of injury issues.

He’s also played outside and does some Safety stuff in nickel. In my opinion, barring setbacks from his Lisfranc, JLew is your 4th corner and probably one of the best 4th CB’s in football.

I am just going on his college tape and mini camp practices. He will be 25 when the season starts and the Cowboys gave up draft capital in next years super draft to move up to get him. That brings expectations. Bland would get beat and then the next play he would make a play in practice. Did the same in the regular season. I hope Scott can be Bland. Like I said the coaches trust him and we will see.

Nice write-up. I really hope you are right, but I just don't get the same feeling with him as you do. Not that I am calling him out as a bad pick or anything, I just can't find anything t get me excited. There are tons of players who went the JUCO route and had success, but in general I look at it as a red flag. That being said, the most telling thing for me was trading up for him. They clearly didn't want to risk not getting him. Someone on the Cowboys saw something they liked a lot. The funny part about him is there is a whole boatload of Cowboy fans pencilling Deuce Vaughn in as a can't miss Sproles type player who is going to be a huge boost t your team and very little talk about Scott, but the team took Scott first and clearly liked him better on draft day.

I just get so excited to hear about and then see all of the young/new guys but I don't pay attention to much and certainly not the compliments literally everyone gets until at least Training Camp and then more during the preseason games. Go Cowboys!!!
The Eric Scott trade up pick is only a 4th round pick. That's just a mid round pick.

I have no qualms about the Scott pick.
There may be something the scouts see in him that they saw in Daron Bland.
They may think he could be like his current CB coach - an Al Harris type.- late rounder that could develop into surprise gem future Pro Bowler ?

- And this is not in the same as the 3rd early pick that they invested in Nashon wright (who supposedly Dan Quinn personally worked out)
And we know how the 2nd rd pick of Joseph pick is currently turning out. .

- Deuce Vaughn has a skill position role that features him handling the ball and subjects him to highlight reels ..his Sproles height-stature, style and suspected role
is naturally gonna garner Sproles like splash plays ..
Instead of Sproles, he could all the more be just Jaquez Rodgers like. But as a late round pick with all of hiscollege game tape and accomplishments- why not ?

I already like that the team is right away giving him first team reps ..and he's already getting his chance to go against Cooks and Gallup.

Although I'm also hearing that Scott has had his toast burnt ..by the speedy Cooks.

That means he gets to test his mental quick recovery and further hone (and correct) his coverage techniques. early on.

As some of you might know, I have been excited about rookie Eric Scott out of USM, and I picked him as my favorite pet cat. I really like his mental makeup as well as his physical traits. Al Harris made note of the fact that Southern Miss used Scott in much the same way that the Cowboys will ask him to play. That man coverage experience, along with his mental ability and his “Quinn type” frame helped me get pretty excited for his chances. Oh, and he has good ball skills and has always gotten his hands on turnovers, which as we know is just something a guy either has or doesn’t have. It can’t really be coached into a player if he doesn’t have it.

This is yet another positive article on Scott since the draft. Just because someone writes that he’s looked good in OTA’s… that doesn’t mean a whole lot. However, when everything you hear about a guy in the offseason work is overwhelmingly positive, it absolutely is a good sign. Like last year with Bland, all we heard was good things about him, and by the time Oxnard rolled around it was easy to see why. He played very well from the first preseason game on. There was never any doubt anywhere that Bland was a great 5th round find.

We haven’t been able to see Scott play in the preseason yet, but otherwise, what we’re hearing parallels last year with bland. And actually, the team has had Scott playing with the first team defense more than Bland did last season. It is definitely a good sign for Scott but he will have to show it in camp once the pads come on.

What I find interesting about this article is the Dan Quinn quotes. In it Quinn says:

"We intentionally took them out, took out Diggs and (Stephon) Gilmore, and sometimes I want to see how guys are going to respond," Quinn said. "Young players, are they going to get tight in there with the starting group or are they going to rise to it? Put him in, see what he can do."

"What we are generally looking for with a player coming in, when you're in line and you're kind of counting reps, 'OK, I think I can go here,' but when you see a guy wanting the moment to go and compete and knowing like, 'I'm balling my fist up. I ain't leaving here,' that's what I'm looking for. Especially for the rookies to have that kind of attitude to say, 'I'm here. I ain't going nowhere' kind of mindset," Quinn said.

"Attitude is really what it takes for young players to assert themselves into these moments because that responsibility is real, to say, 'Hey man, can we count on you when it's there?' and them learning to do that early on. That's a big deal to say, 'I'm down for this count. You can count on me to get it done,' and I've seen that from Eric so far.

"He's just one of those guys, 'I'm not leaving. I'm going to do my thing
.'"

Again, this doesn’t mean a whole lot on it’s own but it is just another piece of good information pointing to Scott being a player in the secondary. In the article, it talks about him already being in front of Joseph and Joseph being moved to the slot, which just shows a little about how the coaches are viewing Scott at this early point.

So, yeah, it is a great sign for Scott that good things keep coming out about him and of course Quinn practicing him with the first string defense is a positive development.

I’m hoping he keeps up the good work and can follow up this outstanding spring/summer with a nice, Bland-like training camp. If he does hit like Bland, this cornerback group will be very, very good and will be set up for the foreseeable future. Diggs, Gilmore, Bland, and Scott would be fantastic. All 4 have ball skills, all 4 have length… it could be a joy to watch.

With the secondary making the QB hold the ball for a beat longer, the defensive ends will cause chaos at the QB. Then, if Mazi and the DT’s can push the pocket, not allowing the QB to step up… it could truly make for a devastating pass rush.

Scott just has to make it happen.

Yeah, we'll see. He was off my radar because one of the first things I do, especially for corner, is look at 40 times, and he had a 4.7, and I didn't know about the fact he pulled his quads. But that goes to show what I say the fact most of us may evaluate players, a few months out of the year, when we have time. These guys are doing it year-round so I hope we found another player in Scott.

How many CB's will Dallas keep? IMO Bland, Gilmore, Diggs and Lewis are locks. If Scott plays well, I would think that either Wright or Joseph is gone.
Goodwin, too, especially if Scott can play gunner. I'm itching to get Goodwin off the team.. because he's ST only.

I don’t either but I did around the draft this year.

The staff gushes over him. Said they knew what they had in Bland and feel the same about this guy.

Lewis is expected to be on PUP. He broke his foot. The worst Lis-france injury that his doctor had seen in his 35 years in the field. Lewis says it feels like it's a new foot. It's bigger than his healthy foot (swollen) and he's wearing his cleat so that the shoe will adjust to the bigger foot.
