"I hope they (offense) do not throw the ball in my direction" Per Roy Williams

You can find comments like that all over the place.
Like I said, your critics normally criticize you. If you attribute the drop in Roy's level of play to a lack of concentration, intensity, or heart, then that's criticism. If you say he got the big payday and now he has eased off, that's criticism also. The majority of the negative comments made about Roy are along those lines, not about religion.

OTOH, you could say Roy's level of play has dropped, and the criticism could end there. You might then add that it was because he found religion, or he has to adjust to a new defense, etc. Then you're building an excuse into it. To me, people who say that aren't really critics of Roy, and unless something was omitted from the interview, it was only that second kind of "criticism" that Roy was addressing.

There isn't, after all, any need for Roy to tell people what people say.

Whatever you're trying to say, it doesn't change the fact that plenty of people claim Roy's religion made him less of a hitter, which is what he said in the interview ("People will say ...").

Wow ...... almost 200 post thread about something clearly taken out of context.

Grats people.

Can we get this bible crap out of the football forum?

Edit: I think its clear that Roy was referring to what people were saying about him; not that religion had anything to do with the hits. And notice, he also did say that hits were coming this year. So assuming he stays religious, why would the hits come if religion was the reason for him not hitting people?

The whole religion thing--when HE brings it up--is just a thin layer of "criticism" wrapped around yet another excuse. The real criticism (and one that's not in the interview) is that he took the $11 million bonus check, and now his heart's not in it anymore.

He could make a lot of us shut up by showing on the field that that isn't true.

I didn't realize you were the one who decided which criticism was real and which wasn't. You must feel important.

In the interview, he absolutely is not saying "people say I stopped the big hits because of religion and that's not true."

What he says is essentially, "people say I stopped the big hits because of religion, and while that is true, we've been the most successful since I found religion."

I hate to interrupt while you guys leap from speculation to speculation, b/c I know it's how you get your exercise, but Roy's not making excuses in this interview. He's commenting on a perception. Well, he's taking time out of his day to comment on a perception in order to get PR for a good cause that he champions. There is nothing here worth taking shots at, even if it is not read correctly and the quotes are taken wildly out of context.

fact is fatboy reads what his critics say and it effects his play. what they say should not effect his play but his play should effect what they say say. happy cinco de mayo:D

Happy Cinco. Fact is, you have no idea what factors may be affecting his play. When he comes out and names possible factors himself, many of the posters in this thread assume he's wrong, and then they start each other off barking and dry-humping everything that moves again.

And, fatboy? Really? That's how it is now?

yes that's how it is now. i used to be a huge fan before he got his big contract, put god before football even during a game, and started not caring and holding this team back.

Here are some real "indisputable" facts.

He used to hit hard.

Now he barely hits at all.

it's one hell of a bullet for the hate gun and the IGS that wants him gone now will magnify anything they can to illustrate a point when in the end it doesn't matter. he's going nowhere.

but the whiners will whine.

not that you care or anything, or even should care, but my respect for you as a poster has gone the way of Joe Gibbs reputation.

flushed.

I wish Roy Williams the best of luck...

on the "church league" flag football team he appears to be auditioning for. He's paid like a top safety in this league. Trouble is he seems to have forgotten this factoid on his way to becoming a fine Christian example in how to "turn the other cheek".

Memo to Roy: stop turning and start burning.

An earlier poster mentioned Roger Staubach and how his faith didn't prevent him from being a topshelf competitor. Or Reggie White. "Onward Chrisitan Soldier"...
