This thread is bizarre ........

The original question posed on this thread was who is best Cowboys defensive player ever ...... so why the heck are names like Lett, Ware and Henderson even popping up at all?

For that matter TT Jones and Harvey Martin ...... ?

I typically hate people that claim to have an opinion that is indisputable, but in this case I just even can't pretend to be open to other ideas - Bob Lilly was hands down the best.

Second and third place seems fairly obvious to me as well, although which comes 2nd and 3rd is debateable. Those players are Randy White and Mel Renfo.

I've been disappointed with how few people have given Renfro his due on this thread. Next to Lilly and maybe White he is far and away the most decorated defender in team history - and a HOFer.

After those 3 it gets a little more murky, but Cliff Harris, Darren Woodson, Chuck Howley, LeeRoy Jordan, Everson Walls, Ed Jones and Harvey Martin probably have to round out the top 10 in some order.

Ware shows great potential. Lett showed flashes of greatness in a career more known for blunders and stupidity.

I vote Too Tall. The guy was a great player and a one of a kind threat coming around the edge. If somehow a team kept him blocked (not easy), he could still cause havoc by tipping the ball up into the air for an interception.

I hope someday that Ware makes me change my mind about this, because if he does then it will mean he had a better career than Mr. Ed Jones, who was great for a really long time.

It wasn't really the topic, but a lot of people are talking about some of the other greats. I was too young to watch Harris, Howley, Jordan, and a lot of the other guys from the 60's and 70's teams. I bet it was cool for you guys old enough to have seen all of this team's many great players play.

If you're old enough to have seen Ed Jones play you must have also seen Randy White play - as well as Darren Woodson and Harvey Martin and Charles Haley .......

I can understand that Lilly and White were before your time, but how can you possibly think Lett (a waste of talent and no consistency) and Ware (an undeveloped player trying to reach his potential) are worthy of inclusion in this topic and not White, Woodson, Martin and Haley?

I'd agree, if we're ruling out mercenaries. Include them, and Deion Sanders gives him a run, and might even surpass him. Whatever else he was, Sanders was the best cover corner in the history of the league. Talk about impact. The guy basically took half of the field out of the passing game.

You're right about the thread it is f'ed up.

And you're right about Renfo. He should be up there.

I didn't mean the best in history, just the best for this group.:star:

Lilly of course. The three HOF defensive players, Lilly, Refro, & White should be debated first. Whose the best? Lilly of course.

Then take it down a level and argue who should be next to go into the HOF.

TT Jones, Chuch Howley, Harvey Martin, Harris, Jordon, Sanders, Walls, Woodson......Green.......Ummm this would be a great thread.:)

Giving serious consideration to Leon Lett as a "greatest ever" Cowboy line man is like thinking Terrell Davis vs Emmitt Smith is even debateable.

Actually, Davis achieved greater heights than Lett did.

But they were both flashes in the pan versus Emmitt & Too Tall.

If, if, if ... Who cares!

Give me the guys that did it!

I also think its a bit absurd to be talking about Ware in these terms.

He's a 2nd year player who had 8 sacks (or whatever) as a rookie. Yeah, he has considerable potential.

No disrespect intended to DeMarcus but please come talk to me AFTER he's delivered on his potential year, after year, after year.

If it was that easy, it wouldn't be a good question. When you have to judge a great player a could have been great player and a player with potential only the best can seperate them.

While the the orginal three of Lett, TooTall, and Ware are not even close to being the best Cowboy defensive players ever, they do share some similarities. All are blessed with rare physical talent. All were or are accused of not playing to their physical ability. But all are or were productive and brought a physcial presence to the defense that offenses have to account for. They played different positions at different times so its hard to compare them. But they are the type of guys who can have an incredible impact on big games because their physical ability.

Yes, I have seen Randy White, Darren Woodson, and Harvey Martin play, although Martin was past his prime when I watched unfortunately. Charles Haley was an absolute beast. I enjoyed the chaos he caused and thank him for being the missing piece of our superbowl puzzle.

The reason I didn't include them is simple. I was just trying to stick to the subject of this thread.

The title of the thread is this: "Too Tall", Lett or Ware?"

That's why I kept it down to Too Tall, Lett, and Ware. I meant no slight to any of our other players.
