Randle an afterthought in righting the ship

The hardest thing to earn with a coach, and the easiest thing to lose, is trust.

The same goes with bosses, clients, spouses, and friends, but those are relationships far more difficult to discard than that between player and coach. In football, there's a bench, and there's no Human Resources, contract clauses, kids, or sentimental emotions to negotiate through the process of using it.

Jason Garrett reluctantly offered Joseph Randle an opportunity off that same bench and into his spotlight of trust. No doubt that was a pained decision and - as it's played out - rightly so. Randle's able body continues to be victim to his vulnerable mind. Effectively, I think Randle is done here after committing the same stupid mental error in back-to-back games, coupled with the off-field ghosts, teammate betrayals, and ongoing meat-bone commentary.

Cowboys personnel and coaches are scrambling right now with last year's triplets missing in action. Randle's stubborn implosion, Dunbar's injury, and McFadden's limitations are complicating a quarterback dilemma, further complicated by an impotent receiving corps without Dez Bryant.

The panic you sense is real because this is a Super Bowl roster, and this season must be salvaged. An 0-3 run has Valley Ranch at Def Con 5, as they scurry to get this shot-up dingy safely back to the barge amidst Hurricane Collarbone. Thankfully, an eye has drifted over in the form of a bye week, and the Cowboys quite obviously are determined to take advantage in the calm waters.

Cassel for Weeden. Collins for Leary. Jones for somebody, I'd bet. Hardy and McClain on board, and now Gregory, too. Maybe even Dez, which alone is putting a bounce in everybody's step at Valley Ranch.

The last cloud hangs over Randle, and my money says Christine Michael is already the lead back in the coach's minds. Randle's opportunity is now fully Michael's. In fact, if Michael shows well for a couple of weeks, Randle becomes disposable and fades away, perhaps even to the inactive list or off the roster altogether. Dallas even brought in another running back to help shuffle that along.

They are simply done with him. Not because of ability, or potential, or lack of need. Because of trust.

good post. Randle does not seem to be that smart. Reminds me of that Jimmy Johnson quote where he said something to the affect he'd never draft a dumb player again because you can't fix that or coach it away. And from what I've seen of Randle so far, his perceived potential based on many flashes last season were more a product of Murray, the scheme and OL rather than talent. Nothing I've seen this season really tells me otherwise - unfortunately.

If you pay close attention to what was SAID by Jerry Jones...and what was DONE by Jason Garrett last year...it is not hard to decipher that Jason was lukewarm on Randle...and it was Jerry....especially from an economic standpoint....that wanted Randle to have this chance.

If "anybody" could run behind this OL...then why wasn't anyone else besides DeMarco given a chance last year?

I was being ridiculed on the other Cowboys board for suggesting that Randle is the odd man out when it comes time to trim back to three RB's. These posters were driven by stats (which aren't great for any of our backs) and not the intangible stuff I was trying to bring up. Good post, Erod.

Good as gold, metaphorically.

Talk about someone's smarts and write "something to the affect." If you want to call someone dumb, use the right words in your post

Love your post overall. But, I am going to be one of those nitpicky guys and point out that Defcon 5 is normal, Defcon 0 is the crisis level.

he may, but probably CM getting more carries and if he shows in game (not just practice) that he can be relied upon, then eventually the starter. the problem with CM is that he was tagged as unreliable in Seattle and that's why they let him go.

Garrett was quoted in his weekly press conf this week stating; Randle is still the starter at RB...

Why has Michael suddenly turned into some mythical beast?

He was unceremoniously dumped for an undrafted backup behind Lynch on a team that has/had visions of a super bowl run.

I hope he is everything this board wants him to be....but the anointing oil is a bit premature.

Besides Randle may be a knucklehead (so is C mike) but he has run hard and well this year in an offense that has not been kind to the running game due to player personnel.

If anybody is disposable at the moment, it's McFadden. Doesn't play ST, brings nothing to the run game, and has lacked in pass blocking (supposed to be his bright spot). At least Randle has shown flashes at times and is still a developing player.

That's the wild card in this. Michael is the knucklehead who hasn't been a knucklehead here yet.

I think the coaches want Randle out of that top RB position, but who? It's Michael, or nobody but Randle. Matt Forte would cost a ton of money and some picks. The rest are old, expensive, and weeks away from being ready.
