Rant About Refs

I could have done without that reference.

Anyways, until we get full-time professional referees who are held to high standards, this slop will continue, even after the 'real' refs return. Even then, there will be screw ups. It happens in every sport.

I don't believe that making them full time refs by itself will make them better.

I think they need better training, a more difficult process to become a ref, and more critical scutiny of the quality of officiating. I also think we need more refs. I think we need more refs on the field because if you have a INT returned, you're not going to find refs who can run a 4.4 forty time. I also think they need to increase the pool of refs so they bad refs can be eliminated and replaced.

People forget that it was NFL paid refs that misread a coin toss...
Bottom line is whoever is wearing the stripes is a fans worst enemy, these guys aren't really doing much worse than the regular NFL crew.

You got it! :star:

When do you run for commissioner?

This is hillarious, the regular refs had made so many bad calls over recent years they have changed the rule book several times to compensate for their incompetence. Thats not saying the replacements are all that good but either way someone, somewhere will be whining and moaning about the officiating. I think they need to let the replacements work if for no other reason than to let them get better. If no one has noticed they are a lot younger, (one of the chief complaints) than the other refs and will only get better. In closing here is some food for thought, how good do you think the geriatric crews coming back will be after not having refed a game since last year, not even preseason?

If the regular officials received this much attention, I wonder if their perceived performance would change.

It would

Personally I think these refs are just as good(or bad depending on your opinion) as the other refs. The old refs better come to their senses because the NFL is doing well without them.

At least the refs got the Denver vs pittsburg game correct-Denver won.:steelers: :steelers: :steelers: :steelers: :steelers: :steelers: :steelers: :steelers: :steelers: :steelers: :steelers: :steelers: :steelers: :steelers: :steelers:

Overall they have been okay.

They are too trigger happy though. There were 6 teams that racked up double digit penalty numbers today. Let them play.

I though the roughing on Matthews was a legitimate call and definitely roughing. It was late, the ball was gone and it was uneccessary. That is roughing, Matthew had a clear view that the ball was gone and could have avoided hitting him.
I agree he took two steps after the ball was out. The second step was him launching himself into the air and onto the back of Alex Smith with the only intent to hurt him. I want the flag thrown in those situations. When its a clean sack and helmets bump after they hit the ground is when I don't want to see a flag. Or in Hatcher's case the DE hits the guy with his hands onto the QBs shoulder pads when he's only a step away after the pass is thrown.

The new officials don't know the rules and otherwise are awful. The old officials know the rules but are still awful. Until the NFL moves the bulk of officiating up to the booth where they can see what TV viewers see, it will continue to be awful. There is absolutely no reason that millions of people should see something clearly happen on the field while the officials stand there looking dumb, either making no call or the wrong call.

I, personally, like the idea that the NFL wants the regular refs to agree to have a "bench" of officials. As the current system stands, an official that makes too many mistakes or a big error gets graded badly, then might lose out a chance to officiate in the playoffs or he might be demoted in the offseason.

If you have a bench, then you can take action on that official right away and bring up one of the reserves to take his place in the middle of the season. This will make officials more accountable and lose their feeling of entitlement.

Other issues like the money gap are what's being paid attention to in regards to negotiations, but keeping more officials in reserve is something the regulars are really fighting against.

Considering these refs are not even BCS level guys in college they have done OK.

And odds are they will get better.

Could not say that about the regular refs

They are in an impossible situation and frankly have not done that bad.

Every fan site, every week complains about the regular officials.

QFT!!! Although the pre-season was pretty bad, overall I think they did pretty well considering the first week in. Although I'd love to have the reg refs back to complain about instead, I wasn't that appalled with how they did overall.

After the Packers (Block in the Back), Saints (Harper PI), Falcons (WR block before the ball is caught by another WR that led to a TD), Eagles (Saying Vick recovered but didn't really have full possession of ball imo), the original refs should get ready to be out there in no time.

PI calls have been all over the place this weekend, there was one in particular towards the end of the Seahawks/Cards game where Rice pushed off twice on the same play and Peterson got called for PI.

apart from that and not knowing the timeout rules at the end of that game they haven't been as bad as expected

considering the regular refs made the same mistake a few years ago you really cannot count that timeout mess too much against them

Even the players are displeased with the refs.

And they should be:

the replacement refs represent the NFL's pushback to labor's steady hand out of benefits and wages. Oh, you won't pay me what ah DEMAND?
Well, I am striking and my fellow players (unionized) will back me up.

In labor speak, the old refs were good the new refs are bad.

Well, the old refs made plenty of goofs. I never blamed them.
The new refs will make plenty of goofs. i will not blame them.

I don't care if the old refs never come back. the game will go on.
Why?

Because the game is bigger than the players and the refs combined.

replacement refs did a good job overall, you can complain just as much about the regular refs after every game...they might of taken a little longer to throw the flag and make the call because they just wanted to try to get it right but I didn't think they did a bad job at alll!!
