Iron Man 2: 7/10

*Small spoilers may exist*

Not as good as the first movie but still an entertaining action flick. One thing that I really liked about the first movie was how it was just one step beyond believability (this is also why the new Batman series is so good); the first movie handled a comic book character in a satisfiably realistic manner. The sequel took another step and half away from realism and I thought the film suffered because of it. Tony's makeshift particle accelerator, the party scene/fight and Nick Fury's ridiculous get-up all served as elements that drew me out of the film. The final scene was over too quickly and was unsatisfying.

Worth seeing, but don't go in expecting it to be at the same level as the original.

I took my Grandmother and Mother to see this at the Movie Studio Grill as a Mother's Day present, even though I wanted to go see Iron Man 2, but today wasn't about me.

I personally think Danny Glover and the guy from X-men probably did this film for a paycheck. It had a few good laughs but overall, it was just bad.

Iron Man II: 7.5/10

The story was not as strong as the original. Stark's health angle could've been a stronger angle, but it was glossed over most of the film.

Robert Downey Jr. was made for Tony Stark/Iron Man and didn't disappoint. Gwyneth Paltrow was limited by the bustle of everything else happening, but she was solid as well.

On the other hand, Sam Rockwell's portrayal of Justin Hammer as a rich doofus wasn't necessary in my opinion. I love Don Cheadle, but truthfully, Terrence Howard could have easily done as much with War Machine as he did.

Mickey Rourke was menacing enough, but an extra 20 or so minutes of face time could've helped. Samuel L. Jackson is doing a great job of tying Marvel movies together, but that's about it.

Oddly enough, the actor I was most impressed with was Scarlett Johansson. Every since I saw the first preview with her in it, I wanted to see if she could pull off the Black Widow. She NAILED it. Her fight choreography was perfect. And I really appreciate that they did not modify her costume and weaponery very much from what it looks like in paperback (or at least what it used to look like when I was still buying comics full-time).

All-in-all, it was a good sequel with could've been better. As always, it's great to see the guy who started it all in these Marvel movies. "Larry King" :muttley:

Time for a new avatar. Gotta scout some new movie previews. :)

Tyson
6/10

I thought it was a decent documentary on Mike Tyson. I think it does a good job of forcing the viewer to ponder what Tyson's life would have been like if Cus D'amato had not died so early in Tyson's career.

I haven't seen the documentary yet but I will. But I always thought about that. Cus was a great stabilizing force in Mike's life and when he died, Mike just went out of control.

Yep, and vultures like Don King were just waiting in the wings to take advantage of Tyson.

In the documentary, Tyson actually gets choked with tears when he talks about old Cus.

This is why I believe you must have good people around you 'before' you become extremely successful. As opposed to trying to find them after you do become massively successful.

I disagree with some of that. Mostly, that I think the story was actually much stronger this time around. Also, I thought Stark's health was a pretty strong element and drove much of his character in the film. It certainly didn't feel glossed over.

And as for Ms. Scarlett, while she was pleasant to look at, and her fight scenes were done well, I certainly didn't care much for her acting. Rockwell was pretty weak too.

I like Cheadle a lot more (generally speaking) than Terrance Howard, though it's weird having different actors in the same role. I wish Cheadle had been in the first instead of Howard.

Oh, and Olivia Munn looked lovely as always.

Iron Man 2 7/10

An enjoyable flick. It receives a high rating solely by virtue of extensive AC/DC usage. Also, Tony Stark is an unabashed <forbidden topic on this board>.

Ironman 7/10 - Pretty much inline with everyone else

I liked it, but it lost much of the magic of the first one, which was unavoidable in my opinion.

I actually liked Sam Rockwell's portayal alot and felt Mickey Rourke was the one that was not needed. I didn't think he seemed particularly dangerous. I think the opening scene with his Darth Vader "Noooo!" pretty much set the tone for how seriously I took him. Plus the way they explain his past was incredibly lame, they could have done a flash back and actually shown him and his relationship to his father.

Downey was perfect as usual, he never sounds like he's delivering a line in any of his films which is what I find great about him. It all sounds improvised.

The worst part for me was that the final battles just weren't satisfying, and for some ridiculous reason, it all happens in the dark!

I really liked Downey in Sherlock Holmes, but in the Iron Man films, I just don't find anything to like about him. He's just a rich wiseass pretty much.

And I hate in every sequel like the Incredible 4 and the Silver Surfer and Iron Man 2 where the superheroes become massive celebrities. It's just too lame and an indictment of today's society as a whole, where people with talent feel like they deserve all this attention and adulation. It's kind of why I like Batman and Superman. They just do their job and don't look for any due for keeping the city/world safe.

"Incredible 4". :muttley:

The Dark Knight and The Man of Steel have secret identities. Their characters wanted their anonymity intact so that they could enjoy private lives. Additionally, they wanted to shield their loved ones from possible enemy retaliation.

Years ago, Marvel allowed Tony Stark to enjoy a secret identity, but that's obviously changed in recent years. That, along with his character's narcissism fueled by a billionaire's lifestyle, was a perfect match for even more celebrity than he already enjoyed and welcomed.

The Fantastic Four's powers began to manifest almost immediately after a well-publicized space launch. There was a fat chance of retaining secret identities after that.

Galactus' herald is a fictional cosmic being. Why would the Silver Surfer care about the attentions directed at him by mortals?

You mean the aborted celebrity wedding.

Bob, if you had billions and even half of Stark's good looks ...

... make that a quarter :p:

... who would YOU surround yourself with?

Not a chubby Gwenyth Paltrow.

BTW I'm better looking than Robert Downey Jr.

I think the reason he is such an ago maniac is in part to make up for the fact that they can't make him an alcoholic like in the comics.

Plus, as they touch on in this movie, a lot of it is just a front and he really does take what he's doing seriously. It may seem like he's taunting the Military by saying they can't have his tech, but he knew they'd try to do exactly what Hammer tried to do if he gave it to them.

That's my take on it anyway. I think it helps that he was already an ego manic, famous, rich and a womanizer before he even created the suit.
