"THIS ONE'S FOR YOU ANTIE!!!" (You'll understand if you ever watch the movie.
)
The first 30 - 35 minutes is slow and frankly boring. The setup is weak. Sure, it is a comedy/action/drama but sometimes you should try putting it all together at the same time. Prison and ex-con stereotypes can be funny but the movie tries too hard to make them fit the plot. To me, the film takes off just before Scott Lang first acquires the Ant-Man suit. Then the hero takes center stage and the special effects (which are very good) and other characters make it an enjoyable film through the ending.
I thought Paul Rudd (Lang), Michael Douglas (Dr. Pym), and Evangeline Lilly (Pym's daughter Hope) played their roles really well. Rudd didn't force his usual comedic persona too much for most of the movie and I think it worked well (after the first quarter of the movie of course). Douglas exudes some qualities (and a little arrogance) associated with one of Marvel's genius-level characters. I thought Lilly was perfect as Hope. That last impression was solidified after seeing the during the end credits cut scene. The father/daughter dynamic between Douglas and Lilly was a good subplot.
Corey Stoll (Darren Cross/Yellowjacket) managed the overly ambitious protege turned villain part but he didn't invoke a lot of fear in my opinion. It seems like Judy Greer always plays the supporting role of some character's relative well and she doesn't disappoint as Lang's ex-wife. The actor playing her police officer husband and his partner were a little too "Keystone" for me. Michael Pena (Luis), T.I. (Dave) and the actor playing Kurt grew on me as the movie went along. The Hayley Atwell and Anthony Mackie's cameos were nice continuity tie-ins. Shoot, Atwell is great to see in any of these movies
Except when she wore all that excessive old age makeup in
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
All in all, I think it is a good addition to the Marvel movie franchise. Now for The Wasp..!
