Sequels lead me to rank them with the movie or movies that preceded them. For me,
Terminator Genesys was loads better than
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and eclipsed
Terminator: Salvation but fell short of the original and lagged way WAY behind
Terminator 2: Judgment Day--which is still the best of the bunch in my book.
Nobody beats Arnold Schwarzenegger's performance as a Terminator in the franchise. He set the standard. I liked how the movie did not shy away from his actual age and hide behind a lot of CGI--with the exception of integrating the original Terminator into the plot of course. Schwarzenegger did not have as many dialogue gems in this movie but there are a few good ones like, "Nice to see you. Get out."
Truthfully, Emilia Clarke was the main draw for me for buying a ticket. I think she did a good job playing an alternate version of Sarah Connor. Her role wasn't quite as hard-edged as Linda Hamilton's in
T2 but she delivered more emotional range for the character. I actually thought Jai Courtney was the best casting of the main characters as Kyle Reese. He could have swapped places with Michael Beihn (sp?) in the original film and pull off the role just as well in my opinion.
The introduction of the O'Brien character was pretty good. J.K. Simmons' part was minor but he steals the show practically each time he's in front of the character. It may be just me but I remain apathetic to Jason Clarke's performances outside of
Zero Dark Thirty. He seemed to sleepwalk through
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and I get the same vibe for his uber-Terminator in this picture. Robert Patrick's T-1000 from
T2 remains the best non-Schwarzenegger Terminator in my eyes.
I thought the helicopter chase was pretty good. The scene that doesn't appeal as much for me was the school bus sequence. My imagination is very flexible compared to some but there are limits to how much inertia the human body can take.
