Knowing - Cage movie where aliens/angels try to help a family through a series of numbers. Meh...could have been much better.

Iboy - Maisie Williams (Aryra Stark) is in this British movie. A boy gets shot in the head right as he has his smart phone by his ear. After the surgery they tell him they could not remove all of the parts of the cell phone from his skull and that they might cause some trouble. Next thing you know he can see electroinic instruments through a visual display, hack into cell phones and other electronic equipment. Maisie is a girl he likes and she was raped by a gang of boys so no he is using his new skills to get rid of them and some other crime in the area. A tweener hero type movie...cheesy yet kind of cool in some areas.

Are you a fan of good science fiction, BP? Good science fiction has strong narrative and hooks, and explores humanity. I'm not talking about Starship Troopers-type science fiction (tho, that movie is a guilty pleasure of mine). If so, I have some great suggestions.

Blue Ruin 9/10

An independent-made revenge film. Extremely well-acted, with minimal dialogue. The story of a man, now homeless, after his family was murdered by (no spoilers). It explores his path of revenge to take down the person/people responsible for his parent's killings.

Incredibly well acted, tightly written, and shot beautifully. Was a top ten film of many of the critics I respect and admire. Watched it again the other day for a second time. Check it out, y'all :)

Get Out - 6/10. From a technical standpoint, and the tone, pretty well done. It was predictable, however, and the themes it tries to explore it does so in a pretty shallow way and with a narrow view. On the other hand, it was pretty humorous at times, and it was nice to see characters (at times) not be completely stupid and falling for ridiculous things.

Bad Santa 2 - Really liked it and it made me laugh a good bit. I still think the first one is my favorite.

Don't know if this counts as a movie, but it is over 90 minutes long, but it would be "I am Chris Farley". 9.5 easy, his parents, brothers, co stars, and just good friends really captured him and I learned a lot about the portly guy that gave a chubby kid like me a lot more confidence in myself growing up.

I remember the day he died. I was in 7th grade. I remember the day Phil Hartman died, too. I'm gonna have to check this one out. Amy (a docu on Amy Winehouse) was fantastic.

Phil Hartman(aka the glue) was amazing as well, the good die young, and its tragic. I highly recommend it though if your a fan of Chris Farley, my avatar with him holding his arms out with a ucalaly is
the cover on that documentary. I might have to check out Amy, thanks for the tip :)

In theater - Cure for Wellness - 4/10 - started out interesting, fantastic visuals. Then the last third of the movie became utterly ridiculous.

At home - The Imitation Game (on Netflix) - 9/10 - I should've seen this sooner, fantastic film. Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley both put in excellent performances, as did the kid who played the younger Alan Turing.

Finally got around to seeing The Hustler. Greatness. Somewhere in my top 25 all-time. 9.5/10

Saw 'The Color of Money' when it came out and thought 'The Hustler' would basically be the same thing. Couldn't have been more wrong. Jackie Gleason, by himself, is more interesting than anything in TCoM.

You're here on a rain check and I know it. You're hangin' on by your nails. You let that glory whistle blow loud and clear for Eddie and you're a wreck on a railroad track... you're a horse that finished last.

So. Cold.

Other movies...
  • Anthropoid...6.5/10 (Cillian Murphy is always compelling to me. Tense but fairly standard WWII story.)
  • A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night...8/10 (This director has a great eye and ear. Excited to see her future work. Clearly raised on Tarantino.)
  • The Wolfpack...7/10 (More of a very interesting subject than a good documentary. Bizarre story.)
  • Force Majeure...7.5/10 (Like Wolfpack, interesting subject more than a great movie. Dinner party convo piece.)
  • Hunt for the Wilderpeople...9/10 (Taika Waititi is super. What We Do in the Shadows was a funny little movie. Never saw this coming. Brilliant.)
  • Boy...8.5/10 (Again, great Taika Waititi movie. Delivers on every level. Unique storytelling voice and sense of humor.)
  • Under the Shadow...7/10 (Well done Iranian poltergeist story that's about something else. Last act, I wanted to see a smarter lead character.)
  • Finding Dory...5.5/10 (Not bad, but nothing really stuck with me. Dory is fun in Nemo in limited doses. A full movie of her was frustrating.)

Is Hunt for the Wilderpeople much like What We Do in the Shadows?

My family absolutely hated What We Do in the Shadows and turned it off half way through.

No, not much at all. Hard to believe it's by the same guy other than the fact he has a brief scene in Wilderpeople.

Wilderpeople is basically part coming of age story and part on-the-run road movie. It was almost a live action version of Pixar's Up with more interesting people. It's much more like another film of his, Boy. It's on Netflix if you have that. I think if a person liked that, they'd like Wilderpeople. It is less comedic than Boy, though Boy gets pretty heavy, but has more adventure. There's a hero. Somebody to root for.

I didn't hate What We Do in the Shadows like you, but it was definitely a one joke movie for me. After 20 minutes, it didn't really have any place to go.

Batman Lego Movie 9/10. Not a big fan of the Caped Crusader but this Batman had a personality at least.

The biggest issue I had was how ridiculous the entire premise was. Here is a shark more interested in swimmers than a whale carcass it had already been eating. That and the final battle with the shark that was completely beyond possible. Those things could not make up for the really good CGI.

Normally I like scifi movies...Some can be a tad slow and try to over think things and just become boring but for the most part I give them a chance. Prefer ones with some good action in them or at least enough to keep it interesting. Really dislike some that are sluggish, often only one or two characters, not much dialogue but are trying to tell a ghost story or alien encounter without it trying to be that way...if that makes sense.
