Moonlight - 6.5/10. Not sure why this won best picture. It wasn't very good. Not sure why Mahershala Ali got a an oscar for best supporting actor. He was in the movie for about 20 minutes and had about 30 spoken lines. The plot was OK, the cinematography was good, but I thought it was just mediocre.

My guess? Politics (probably the same for Spotlight). Haven't seen it yet, so I can't really say. I think the only best picture nom I have seen so far is Hell or High Water (even though I own 2 others) which I thought was just okay.

logan.

3 of 10.

no stan lee. no scene in the credits.

not much of a real plot or surprises. he's "wounded" the entire movie more or less and it's 2 1/2 hours long.

I'd give it a 5-6. "Too slow" and "when will this end" came to mind.

Maybe. I thought Lion was superior, in every way, and it didn't get much buzz. Hell or High Water was OK. Nothing special.

Haven't seen Lion. Didn't look interesting to me but I'll give it a look. I loved Spotlight and Manchester. Thought they were 1A/1B for best movie.

i can see that also. i was just expecting something of a story and not a logan who could only limp and a prof x who was wheezing the entire movie.

but about 45 min in, i did find myself thinking "wow, 2 more hours to go" and the countdown started.

He's in it for about 20 minutes. Anthony Hopkins is in Silence of the Lambs for about 15 minutes (and he won Best Actor!) and Judi Dench is in Shakespeare in Love for a whopping 8 minutes, and she won too. Beatrice Straight's Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winning performance in Network, is all of five minutes That's the way it go sometimes. The impact you have on the screen in that short amount of time is worthy enough. It is a deserving win and the movie is a deserving Best Picture winner. Get over it.

I thought Ali had a good performance. Reminded me of Ryan Gosling in films like Drive but with more depth and emotion that you can actually relate to. That being said, I thought the kid from Manchester (the teenage version) should've gotten a nomination for best supporting actor. I thought his performance was right up there with Affleck's. He just didn't have any of those "Oscars scenes" in the movie. Affleck had a few and that's what gave it to him. Didn't think Michelle Williams should've been nominated at all. She wasn't in it much and wasn't that amazing when she was.

Horny Grannies

An inspiring ...and I mean, VERY INSPIRING tale of three elderly woman who fear they are no longer valuable members of society simply because they are not young. They no longer feel appreciated .

In an effort to comfort each other they form a special bond. Eventually, their search for social value is validated when they decide to order a couple pizzas. In the process, they meet a shy but helpful pizza delivery boy who helps them to come to the realization that they are indeed appreciated.

I thought the acting was great, you could tell that each of the three actresses were committed to giving their very best effort in a physically demanding role. The pizza boy did a great balancing act that left us feeling as though each older woman, though different, contributed a unique set of talents.

I recommend this movie to anyone over the age of 18. It certainly left me wanting more. Hopefully they will consider a sequel.
10/10.

Sausage Party -- 2/10
Significant amounts of weed must have been involved in this movie's creation...even by the financing people. I feel like everything in the script involved somebody going, "Dude, wouldn't it be funny if a [insert random food item] did...", taking a deep puff, then going with the first stray thought that popped into their head. Mix in some mostly failed attempts to tackle bigger themes like group think and self delusion. It ends up being 90 mins of middle school humor built around easy, tired stereotypes and lame food-related puns.

Dead Snow -- 6/10
Dead Snow 2 -- 7/10
Fun, silly, very gruesome Norwegian movies with some fast undead *****. First one is a little film schoolish but has some surprises. Follow up takes it to another level. Frequently would think, "nah they're not going to go th...ooookaaay they really went there." Some Evil Dead vibes (though Raimi is better).

Magnus -- 5/10
Pretty watchable doc about chess prodigy and grandmaster Magnus Carlsen. Looks like he just rolled out of bed most of the time.

The Impossible -- 8/10
Thought it would be standard Roland Emmerich-level disaster movie fare. Aims much higher and often hits. Amazed the visual effects went without acclaim. Not even an Academy nom. The 'behind the scenes' on youtube is worth watching.

Manchester - 3.
Was so slow about what I could not figure out other than the brother dying.

Girl on the Train - 4/10. Decent performance by Blunt aside, this was kind of a trainwreck. None of the characters are likeable, the "twist" can be seen a mile away, there is a complete lack of humor, the editing leaves a lot to be desired, and it's generally pretty lifeless.

I absolutely loved it. Perfect ending to Jackman's wolverine. Didn't once think about "when will this end".

Logan - 8 out of 10.

I liked that it was an unexpected turn in the Wolverine/X-Men series, which if you're aware of the comics, Fox has completely mishandled and under-utilized to this point.

I appreciate the risks that both actor and director took and respect the fact that they didn't bow down to studio pressures. It was also nice to see the great Patrick Stewart being allowed to act.

Not the usual superhero movie so don't go in expecting that, but if you're open to something different, give this one a shot.
