Rate the last movie you saw

I watched Weapons and Sinners last week.

Weapons - thought this was a tight little film. Kept my attention and I liked the narrative style (switching character POV). I think it was an allegory for schools shootings. I enjoyed it.

Sinners - I cannot believe this movie is getting the hype it is getting. Seems like Dusk till Dawn, but set in the Jim Crow era. However, it was not as well done as DTD & the media is making this out like some kind of masterpiece. Cinematography and the acting was good, but the story lacked any deepness and was very surface level for me.
Weapons kept you interested.

I liked Sinners. Like you though I did not think it was as good as people were making it out to be.

This one reminded me a little of Full Metal Jacket. Where the movie is basically broke down into two distinct chapters even though they are tied together.

I get the from dusk to dawn comparisons but sinners is more of a gothic or southern lore story. From Dusk till Dawn was much wilder and full of comedy as well. I like Dusk till dawn better, have watched it many times. Sinners I would have to FF to the second half of the movie if I watched it over and over.

Lol. I'm not worried about being scared. I just find most horror movies to be bad. A lot of them depend on loud noises and jump scares.

I like The Exorcist (classic)
It was great until the ending.
Us was pretty good. Original story.
Get Out, while not great, had a really good story.

There are others I liked, I just think of them off the top of my head...Unless you count Alien as a horror movie. That would be my first choice.
Yeah...not many scary movies anymore.
i think that died back in the Friday the 13, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw era back in the day. The shock factor is just not like it used to be.
Oh and the Gargolye movie from years ago and the floating kid at the window in the original Salems Lot....that was scary stuff but that was when I was a wee lad.

There are still good Horror movies.

I liked the first two Conjuring movies.
I liked some of the Insidious movies, that high pitched violin shrieking music still gives me goose bumps.

Exorcist still might be the best special effects of any movie along with the Thing....Practical stuff that beats the heck out of the CGI stuff of today.

I watched the “ Girl on the Train “ because of Emily Blunt and oh I don’t know movies of this ERA seem to suck . Emily didn’t disappoint just the entire movie did .

Finally got around to watching. It was ok.
It kind of reminds me of a bigger budget It Follows type movie.
Nothing spectacular but kept my interest.

Groundhog day with a killer. Even makes fun of itself and brings up groundhog day at one point.
These were kind of fun movies. Not taking itself too serious, some fun scenes and joking about.

The mask as the university mascot is kind of stupid...Can't see a University ever having the Baby as its mascot. But otherwise it was a fun watch.

PG type family film based on a real girl. Not sure how much they changed her story to hollywood it up. Not a terrible movie but it is a family
style movie.

I am a fan of WWII movies. This one was more of a teenage love drama with a young girl having to navigate life when she had a white mom and black father while living as a proud german in **** germany. Kind of tough at times even though they did not take it to Rated R levels. As i said, more of a love story/drama and not really an action type war movie.

This one was just straight to video B movie.
Two different young people abused by different people thrown together and trying to survive. One just happens to be an undead girl for whatever reason. The other was an abducted boy who is blind with massive scars over his eyes.

Meh

It is not as good as the original, but I definitely believe it is better than the sequel. The story flows more smoothly from start to finish.

That said, James Cameron does not recreate the wheel here. He reuses the same formula as seen in the first two movies. Cameron pumps more action into this third film. And the ending has a welcome twist, although I think everyone will see it coming from a MILE away.

I know I’ll sound negative, but I hope this movie tanks hard.

After the last Avatar film, it’s evident that Cameron doesn’t have a story to tell.

The second movie was just a repeat of the first, and by all indications this one is the same.

He can certainly do beautiful special effects, but he doesn’t have the story to warrant all of these sequels.

A flashy film isn’t enough without a story.

I hope the new avatar is not the same Corp from Earth attacking Alien home world again. If getting their butts kicked and forced to leave in two films...how do they continue to keep coming back in mass force without the Pandora people stopping the initial build up.

I haven't looked at the box office numbers, and it may not do well, but the fourth and fifth films were already locked in for 2029 and 2031. It's James Cameron, but I am still surprised he could get the studio to a 20+ year commitment for a one-story franchise.

Same corporation and military. The story resumes around six months after Avatar: The Way of Water. Pretty much all the same faces returns. Even Edie Falco reprises her General role.

Kinda tired of humans being the bad guys, who are willing to spread genocide, just for some convenient liquid or mineral...I want to watch fantasy movies.

The human greed factor is a deviation from virtually all sci-fi/fantasy genres, but not all. Battle for Terra (which I highly recommend although it is an animated film) and the Dune films (not Earthlings per se though) are similar examples.

Although his movies could be improved, James Cameron does explain the root cause of humanity's wanton greed really well. Unobtanium is a mineral resource found almost exclusively on Pandora. It helps make ultra-advanced technologies possible, including interstellar flight.

They destroy the whale-like creatures for Amrita. The fluid's main function is to extend humans' lifespans. By a lot.

Granted, both products are utterly despicable gains of exploitation. However, human history is littered with similar examples. Very often, movies have reflected humanity in all its shades of being. Cameron's imagination has chosen one of humanity's darker sides for his Avatar films.

Edit: I think Cameron accomplishes that particular goal if the audience is repulsed by what humans are capable of doing to others.

Isn't that what I said? :muttley:

For the most part, yes. I wanted to add the reasoning why the bulk of the Avatar audience is not tired of watching humans commit genocide for those resources in this type of genre.

Well, the studio has not grown tired yet since they have two more movies in the pipeline, lol. Truthfully, the book is still out on this third movie as far as interested people are concerned. The final box office numbers will be the ultimate indicator of overall audience fatigue.

Agreed.

But when the dollars from the original film kept rolling in, they probably felt like they had a license to print money.

And even if it was (in my opinion) a huge disappointment, the second film still made $2 billion dollars.

So the sequels have probably already been paid for.

I was watching some show where Cameron was with a bunch of the writers after the success of the first film.
He as saying he wanted to discuss with the writers what made the film was so good before they started talking about what the new movie would be about.
They kept giving ideas of what could be part of the new movie and he again said they were not talking about the new movie, just making sure what made the original so good.

So I understand the bad guys were the humans and the good guys were the natives to the planet. I have no problem with that...hell the whole idea is based off of what the US did to the Native Americans in the real history of america..

Problem that I have is, they beat the corp earth inhabitants. Forced them off of the planet. Yet they came back for the next movie and looked to be full of new vehicles and troops in a manner that would suggest they had been back for some time yet nothing was done about it.

Furthermore the idea that it takes so long to travel back to earth, then to turn back around and travel to the planet. In the original movie it was said that it took them 5 years 9 months of travel to get there. So basically 6 years on a one way trip.

Now if the humans were forced to leave, it would take them 6 years to go back. Load up a unreal amount of new air vehicles, weapons, troops, food and other related equipment. A number of ships to carry all of that. Then it would take another 6 years to get back to Pandora. So at the very least 12 years of time has passed. That does not even take the time to load all of the equipment or any logistical time to get the missions approved and so on.

So after the second time they are forced to leave and come back...another 12 years minimum. So Jake Sully has been on Pandora with his tribe for 24 years at least.

And yet again the humans are allowed to come to the planet in mass with large volumes of equipment and apparently the people of Pandora did nothing but let them come back and unload a massive army and equipment to attack them again in order to get the minerals they want.

I mean come on....fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice and any time after that, shame on me.

Why not make the threat or enemy from another planet or group of people. They already seems like they are having issues between different clans on the planet...which is kind of odd since all are interconnected through the trees and roots and so on.

But no need to have the humas come back again and let them reestablish their forces to take over yet again.

Ok...Sorry for my old man rant but come on Cameron.

And 3-D movies never quite made the comeback he was banking on. ;)

I like horror movies, but was disappointed I couldn't get into Smile. Whatever the reason, just wasn't that entertaining and didn't make it past 30 minutes before clicking off.

To be somewhat fair, in the 2nd movie, they saw the humans arriving. I don't think they were already there at the start of the movie. Also, all the loading and preparations for the trip back could've been done while they were heading back to Earth.

What I really don't understand is that, as brutal as the humans are, why didn't they just rain fire on everything, then take what they wanted, rather than confront the Na'vi face to face, and risk getting their butts kicked again?
