We got the belt when we were young.

It was used judiciously, but it was always there as a real threat.

I thought Barkley defended spanking in general, but wasn't necessarily defending Peterson. He did say those images of the child were disturbing.

I think you are right, although he did say that beatings using switches, and leaving welts, and lacerations was not uncommon with black parents in the south. His idea of spanking is different than mine.

Peterson has been reinstated by the Vikings for this week's game.

What has changed since Sunday morning?

Just as in the Ray Rice incident, I think if we had a video of this poor little four year old screaming and crying while a huge man beat him again and again, .. it would change our minds.

Which is messed up.

This guy shouldn't be allowed to play.

I think it has more to do with logistics rather than anything about his case changing. The indictment and warrant came out early Friday afternoon. They knew at that time that he had to deal with everything that entails. He had to fly to Texas to get arraigned. They did not know for sure if he would be available to fly back to Minny to play. It was a possibility that he would have to stay in Texas through the weekend. They just went ahead and deactivated him for the game until the initial process of this mess got dealt with. Now they are just waiting for the rest of the case and due process to run its course. If this event had started last Wednesday he probably would have played against the Vikings(whoops, Pats) this past weekend.

OK, ..Gotcha, .. I still feel that if we had a video of this occurring, it would provoke as much as, if not more of a response than the Ray Rice video did.

I agree. Video changes peoples minds and increases the voice of the public perception.

Agreed, .. but it shouldn't take a video in this case, .. just close your eyes and imagine someone as big as Peterson holding a 4 yr old boy and whipping him (with whatever he was using) until his legs, butt, and privates bled and welted up. The little guy screaming, crying, and trying to pull away from him.

But that's OK, let's let him play a football game this weekend. Pretty sickening in my opinion.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport obtained the following statement from Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson:

My attorney has asked me not to discuss the facts of my pending case. I hope you can respect that request and help me honor it. I very much want the public to hear from me but I understand that it is not appropriate to talk about the facts in detail at this time. Nevertheless, I want everyone to understand how sorry I feel about the hurt I have brought to my child.

I never wanted to be a distraction to the Vikings organization, the Minnesota community or to my teammates. I never imagined being in a position where the world is judging my parenting skills or calling me a child abuser because of the discipline I administered to my son.

I voluntarily appeared before the grand jury several weeks ago to answer any and all questions they had. Before my grand jury appearance, I was interviewed by two different police agencies without an attorney. In each of these interviews I have said the same thing, and that is that I never ever intended to harm my son. I will say the same thing once I have my day in court.

I have to live with the fact that when I disciplined my son the way I was disciplined as a child, I caused an injury that I never intended or thought would happen. I know that many people disagree with the way I disciplined my child. I also understand after meeting with a psychologist that there are other alternative ways of disciplining a child that may be more appropriate.

I have learned a lot and have had to reevaluate how I discipline my son going forward. But deep in my heart I have always believed I could have been one of those kids that was lost in the streets without the discipline instilled in me by my parents and other relatives. I have always believed that the way my parents disciplined me has a great deal to do with the success I have enjoyed as a man. I love my son and I will continue to become a better parent and learn from any mistakes I ever make.

I am not a perfect son. I am not a perfect husband. I am not a perfect parent, but I am, without a doubt, not a child abuser. I am someone that disciplined his child and did not intend to cause him any injury. No one can understand the hurt that I feel for my son and for the harm I caused him. My goal is always to teach my son right from wrong and that’s what I tried to do that day.

I accept the fact that people feel very strongly about this issue and what they think about my conduct. Regardless of what others think, however, I love my son very much and I will continue to try to become a better father and person.

And a second case emerged today. Dude needs a suspension

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...terson-case-involves-alleged-head-wound-scar/

It don't look good for him.

Peterson compared the NFL to slavery a couple of years back. It was a very ridiculous comparison. NFL players get paid very well and most importantly they choose to play football. If they don't want to put up with the rigors of the NFL they can quit and move on with their lives. Slaves had no say in their lives. They could not choose to do anything other than what the slave owner told them to do. If they didn't and even sometimes if they did, they would get whooped by the slave owners. Peterson's children appear to meet the definition of slaves unlike their father.

I don't even know what to think anymore about these NFL troublemakers.

These guys have the world at their fingertips & they just piss it away.

I would not want him.

Just out of curiosity, what were your thoughts on Dez and his issues earlier in his career? Did you not want him either? Look at Dez now. Dallas showed faith in him. Now he's a top 5 receiver on the field and a model cutizen off of it. It's never too late to mature. It just matters that you do.

I'm hoping Ro McClain is another example.

If Dez had continued to be a immature troubled guy no I would not want him on the team.

But since this thread is about Peterson & not Dez I will just say that while AP is a great player he seems to have a problem caring for his kids. In fact it appears he abuses them. I would not want a guy like that on the Cowboys.

This latest incident was not the first. Another child of his was also handed over to the mother injured.

The legal process needs to take place but it seems very clear this guy is not capable of caring for his own.
