RB expendable Debate

I think a big piece of this will depend on Daks development.

Right now, he needs great protection (Zeke helps), great running game and a solid check down game that can churn out extra yards.

If he can start seeing the field better and be more accurate the RB becomes more expendable.

If not, maybe you let the QB walk and pay Zeke and get a cheap rookie QB.

I reallt think the "needs great protection" assertion has been disproven. He's had to deal with less than average protection this season and has risen to the occasion. And even with Zeke's ability to block as an RB it doesnt provide to much value to the team.

I'll never side with paying a franchise RB over franchise QB. Not in today's NFL

Touché...I can get behind it if we let him walk just hoping we’d allocate the resources right.

Been seeing a lot of talk about the upcoming decision of what we do with Dak...and rightfully so, as I feel like he’s been incredibly inconsistent but that is another conversation.

What about Zeke? Obviously this dude is the heart and soul of our O. I was on record saying we should’ve drafted Ramsey due to how easy it is to draft serviceable RBs. Not saying we made the wrong decision bc Zeke has been stelllar... but look around the league...

Steelers
Chargers
Chiefs
Etc...

Key RBs go down and life goes on...

Not saying don’t pay the dude, but I think it’s a serious question to be considered whether or not we make him the highest paid RB in the league moving forward at the expense of paying other guys on the team.
I say we have to resign Zeke. what do all of those teams have in common? a great passer that can be center of offense. our offense starts with Zeke and runs through zeke. when zeke does good we win. he is special.

And here we go again, and again, and again.

Can count on once a week of these threads popping up.

I will wait another few years, see how Zeke is holding up. Of course there will be those that say he is done when he isn’t.

Name some RB’s that flamed out recently on 2nd year deals. And not due because of a typical injury. Like an ACL, because that can effect any position and player.

Oh and speaking of ACL injuries to RB’s. Frank Gore had a horrible knee injury. Was never to play again according to some.
And all he did was become one of the top 10 rushers or close to that in NFL history.
So don’t tell me RB’s don’t last past their 1st contract.

But we have 2 LBs who play at the same level as Lee this season. Who do we have who could even come close to replacing Zeke?

Right now? No one...

We’d have to draft a quality replacement, which the league has proven to be fairly easy.

To be honest, I don't think Zeke will age well enough to justify a 2nd contract. He seems to have some "play when he wants to play" in him (compare his dialed-in game right now to his sloppy, error-prone game early in the year like vs Seattle) and doesn't start the season in NFL shape. He's going to lose a step after all the shots he's taking - if he doesn't start taking care of his body more seriously, that step down could be a cliff.

I bet we can get 7000 - 8000 rushing yards out of him over a 5 year deal + 1 franchise tag, which would more than justify the top 5 pick IMO.

Gotta see what Mike White is before we bring in another rookie qb,

Gore just passed up Curtis Martin and is 4th on the all time rushing list. He'd have to play another season to pass up Barry Sanders for 3rd.

The reason for this is system, but here's the difference.

There a ton of RBs that can be good starters, but the great ones, the blend of intangibles, physical skill-set, and other factors, are just that much better, but the problem is the variance between the superstars versus the just a guys in a year Adrian Peterson v. Arian Foster is a solid example of a guy out of nowhere who crushed it for a solid period... whose career output would you prefer in our uniform?

I'm going Zeke over almost every guy in the league... just given 3 years, Barkley is the only other contender.

From observing the drafts, I'd say they plan on paying Zeke.

If they didn't, they would have at least been trying to groom a replacement. We've only got two RBs even on the 53, and the other one is a JAG.

I've wanted them to take mid round RBs and churn. All signs point to them having no intention of that.

Fairly easy? There aren't many RBs who do everything very well. He's probably the most well rounded back out there, and replacing him would be extremely difficult, IMO........................though I wouldn't miss the "Feed me" crap.

I love Zeke but it doesn't make sense to tie a very large amount of money up in a RB. I hope he'll give us a discount (along with his BFF Dak) and they stay because they want to win together.

I agree. Jerry wants the triplets back...yeah still, but if Stephen is not on board giving Zeke top money, it could be very interesting when the time comes. I lived through that 90's era, we were special for half the decade. The issue we have here is that our team philosophy is marketing, and team. Zeke sells jerseys, and puts a lot of money in Jerry's pocket. The best part is Zeke is a great player. So, Jerry is living memories, and is making bookoo bucks on top of it. Same with Dak, and now, man, ...Amari just put a sweet luscious kiss on top of it all (Mr. I'm floating away like a butterfly, batting my eyelashes Jones).

Also, other teams may be able to go with the switching backs and not overpaying approach, but the Jones' are considering things beyond the field, propelling this team into the marketing stratosphere and ching-chinging it all the way to their nearest financial institution. He may give Zeke a big contract, although I do not think a record breaking one.
