How do you explain the 7 TD's/8 Int's down the stretch ??

Well they didn't magically get film on him. Unless of course, teams were too cheap to get pre-season film.

We didn't play well in several of those games. Period. You don't play well, your O has to throw -- teams know it and key on it. As a result, your QB doesn't do well.

Maybe it had something to do with the giving up 30+ points per game. When you're requiring a first year starter to go out and put up 30 points in every single game, he might -- just might -- try and force a few throws.

Totally agree. Gotta gamble in this league.

Mister Jones has done his fair share of gambling with things that were uncertain and I don't think the results have been great.

I am sure he was going for the gusto with the Joey Galloway pick.

He probably was screaming "no guts no glory" as he played Salary Cap Russian Roulette with players that he knew were perishable.

Jones needs to gamble on the surest thing.

From what I see, Romo appears to be very grounded and would accept playing up for his contract. I don't see anything that suggests he wouldn't.

Jones then would only be gambling that Romo succeeds and makes him have to pay, rather than wringing his hands throughout the upcoming year biting his lip to see if Romo was going to live up to the contract.

We've got a good situation here - Romo knows if he signs big and outplays the deal that Jerry will make it right. That's a major advantage. If Romo sucks, well that's how it goes. Based on how he played last season, I firmly believe he can have great success in this league.

The "figured him out once they got film" idea that folks float is idiotic considering that he had more preseason snaps than any QB over the previous 2 years.

If he has been "figured out" that is even more reason to put that theory to the test in a few games before pulling the trigger. Fallacy or not, it is still a very plausible theory that has been mentioned before and not just by fans.

I would like to see Romo get a long term deal done now. If he pans out and it needs re-done later no problemo. If he tanks then he tanks and we go QB next April.

I would rather pay now and run the risk of getting burned over not paying and watching him kick butt and then leave.

Tony likes being QB of the Dallas Cowboys. I wouldn't expect him to be going anywhere.

What if we sign Romo to a Schaub contract, he plays like crap, and then we have to draft a QB?

Here's the deal: The way Romo ended the season last year made me think the NFL caught up with him a tad. Make him stay in the pocket cause he isn't very tall, etc.

Not saying he won't be great, but I have serious reservations about long-term at the moment.

Do you realize the 7 million in siging bonus money Schaub got is chump change for a guy you think is a franhise QB, right? Romo won't except 7 million and if he does Jerry would jump on that so fast it would make your head spin.

I say wait it out. Let him prove it this season that's he's worth the dough.

Sure, we may get a bargain by signing him to an extension now, but if he performs to everyone's expectations and lights up the league, he's gonna want to renegotiate anyway. Either way, a good QB's gonna cost $$$.

On the other hand, if he plays below expectations this season, we won't be burdened by a big / long term contract.

And he'll probably always have that. It didn't leave Favre or Elway.

We dare not wait untill midseason. Its a risk- but Romo's price will double if he is playing at a pro bowl level then. Jerrah knows he needs to get it done before regular season or in the first month at the latest.
right now we can get romo at schaub price or a little more, with a bigger signing bonus and with incentives. If we wait, it jumps real high real fast. Look at what Brees got- and he had a shoulder injury. If romo lights it up the first half of the season he starts to get near Manning/Brady level of contract. Mcflabb at least.

I don't think Romo really wants to sign a contract now.

He knows he's got huge money coming. The guy doesn't lack for confidence, and believes he's getting even better. If he does get better, that puts him in top 5 QB money - right there with Manning, Brady, Palmer, and McNabb. So there's no reason for Romo to sign anything short of a "max" deal now.

IMO, he signed that extension to prove himself, to get that huge payday, with huge guaranteed money.

I don't think there's any way we let him get away, regardless.

But I'm almost positive we're not going to get him for cheap, and not for much less than 20 mil guaranteed.

Who wouldn't like being QB of the Dallas Cowboy?

I don't expect Romo to go any where either.

Of course we can. (Though I think that this idea, now that I think about it, would give us even more problems resigning Newman - considering the money Romo could command - than the situation I described in my original post.)

The thing is, we can also easily afford to sign him NOW. In doing that, though, we avoid a lot of potential problems/complications of waiting to sign him...not to mention us getting him at a deal that could prove to be well below market value. I just see very few problems with the idea of getting this deal done ASAP.

Yeah, Ellis is showing us now what a great thing it is to sign a player at a supposedly "below market" contract. Everybody sure comes out happy with that. All we need is a great QB wanting to be traded in 3 years because he feels he is getting shafted.

Just wait and see what kind of player he will be and sign him to a FAIR contract based on his play.

Maybe, but when your defense is in free fall, you have to gunsling it to have a chance. Playing it safe at that point is a losing strategy.

I think Jerry will get a deal done before the season. I highly doubt that Jones wants to deal with contracts in the middle of the season. Romo has proved more than many QB's who have gotten contracts including these rookie QB who walk in making big money and have done nothing in the NFL.

Brian Brohm is the 2nd coming of Carson Palmer. Seen him play several times. Not very mobile, but has a cannon, quick release and his accurate.

Very smart too. Football family background.

That's funny, because from what I've read or seen he doesn't remind anyone of a Carson Palmer, more like a Drew Bledsoe with less of an arm. Palmer was a way better Pro QB prospect. Everyone I've talked to says he's a little too immobile..

It was the combination of the two, really.

I haven't heard that but I would agree with your assesment.

Brohm seems like the top-rated qb regardless.... not that he may be the best one; that being said I will not watch this team if we draft Chad Henne:ralph:

I think if this team does well next year and we don't really like Mcfadden, we should seriously consider trading one of our first round picks again for future use in next years draft. (not that BS where we trade for more picks in the same draft.)
