Reasons why we should resign Romo NOW

I'd like to see what he does this year before locking him in long term.

I know his price could sky rocket, but that's fine by me. If he goes out and plays at a Pro Bowl level, then I have no problem paying out the nose for him. If he proves he is a franchise qb, then I'm fine paying him like one.

I don't like the idea of locking him in now to a long term deal. There is no upside to the Cowboys beyond saving some money. And if he turns out good, then whether we could have had got him cheaper is irrelevant. There is a downside to locking him in: he could have been a flash in the pan, and then you are stuck with an untradeable player for 5 more years. That's a huge downside.

So I say let Romo play for his contract. Let him show us what he is worth. And then pay it to him if he backs it up.

Yeah, Ellis is showing us now what a great thing it is to sign a player at a supposedly "below market" contract. Everybody sure comes out happy with that. All we need is a great QB wanting to be traded in 3 years because he feels he is getting shafted.

Just wait and see what kind of player he will be and sign him to a FAIR contract based on his play.
If he outplays his contract, I would have no problem with re-doing his deal in the future.

Ellis has done nothing to show that he deserves a raise, that's why he's not going to be getting one. It's a completely different situation.

Better yet, if he outplays his deal, then JERRY will have no problem re-doing it.

Everyone knows that. Romo knows that.

Saving money isn't my main motivation to wanting to get the deal now (though it would be an added bonus). I do think that there are several issues with waiting 'til the end of the year, listed in my original post.

How sickening would it be for Romo to have another great year, only to have him jet as a FA after the season? I know that we could slap the franchise tag on him, but considering how players have taken that designation over the last couple of years, I think that is the last thing I would want to do to our starting QB.

Based on 10-11 starts and with the way he finished up last season, there is NO WAY Romo deserves a big contract extension/rework at this point.

It would be a risk to give him too much money. But, sometimes risks pay off.

Jay Cutler rookie contract was 6 years 48 mill and he had not stepped on the field in the NFL. Romo has actually done a lot more than many players who are currently under nice contracts.

I would wait...we could get burned. 3 Stud QB's in the upcoming draft.

You mean stud's like David Carr, Joey Harrington, Ryan Leaf, Andre Ware and 1001 first round QB flame-outs?

No.

Sign Romo long-term.

You mean having a QB rating of over 80 while your defense is giving up over 30 points a game?

Yeah he was terrible.

I saw this thread on kffl and decided to look up the stats to see if the original poster had them right.

Indeed, he did....

When we trailed by 1-8 points, Romo posted a QB rating of 51.4 (2 TDs; 4 INTs).

In our division games, his completion percentage was 58%, 5 TDs, 7 INTs, 71 QB rating

Fourth Quarter, when within 7 points, he had 3 TDs and 4 INTs on the season.

There is some risk involved with Romo, too....

Good info, thanks. Most can play with the lead, but true winners like Roger play their best when their team is down.

the ***?

You posted these earlier....and then deleted them....and then posted them again.

There's always risk. I'm thinking risking it on Romo is one of the smartest plays we can make. Unless somehow Carson Palmer's gonna fall into our lap.

I'm not saying get rid of Romo or suggesting anything of that like.

I just would prefer to wait a couple of games and see what Romo does before we extend him.

That is all.

I don't think that's horrid considering two of the three teams he played within the division were playoff teams.

Yeah, the Giants were a playoff team last year.

The injury riddled, backed into the playoffs, luckily finished at .500 Giants.

With their outstanding secondary....but hey.....

And if he has those kind of stats when we play Philly again, Philly will look pretty nice sweeping us setting up for a nice division title. On the bright side, those kind of numbers should be able to beat the Skins and Giants though.

People have been throwing that out, but really, how realistic is it? I HIGHLY doubt that either Romo or the Cowboys want to do any negotiating during the season. I honestly think that we get the deal done before the season, or see what happens after it has ended.

EDIT: Does anyone know the last Cowboys player that we extended during the season? I can't remember any, but I am sure that there are some.

Draft Clausen in three years....
Yeah, because Clausen has proven he is NFL caliber talent to this point, moreso than Romo. You are so tired.

Good question. I don't know.

And I know its highly unlikely to happen....I do in fact expect an extension to happen before the season started.

I would just prefer to see him a couple of games before we lock him up for mega-bucks....

I don't think Romo really wants to sign a contract now.

He knows he's got huge money coming. The guy doesn't lack for confidence, and believes he's getting even better. If he does get better, that puts him in top 5 QB money - right there with Manning, Brady, Palmer, and McNabb. So there's no reason for Romo to sign anything short of a "max" deal now.

IMO, he signed that extension to prove himself, to get that huge payday, with huge guaranteed money.

I don't think there's any way we let him get away, regardless.

But I'm almost positive we're not going to get him for cheap, and not for much less than 20 mil guaranteed.
Thats what I have been thinkin, and have been wondering why Schaub type numbers have been thrown around. Anything less than 12 mil guaranteed is a joke. Some people on here are really screaming 7-10 mil guaranteed. Bigg got 16 mil guaranteed, and he doesnt even play left tackle! Why would TR get any less?
