Solidifying the defense by extending Diggs, the raise Martin received, trading for Lance, today's extension of Steele and the incoming extension of Lamb is all being done as part of a strategic roster construction so that when Dak and the front office negotiate a new deal, the front office is going to be able to say we've given you all these key pieces for success, now it's time that you work with us.

Plus, the front office is going to let them know they can not budge with Micah needing an extension as soon as next year.

Dak got the max deal last time around.

Now it's time for him to take a team friendly deal for a Superbowl run.

If not, then it will be best for both parties to go their separate ways.

Hopefully a team friendly extension is worked out with Dak.
That is the writing on the wall, some will choose to read it legibly while others will cross their eyes.

All of the mentioned moves, with Trey Lance being the exception, were made to compete for a Super Bowl appearance or championship now or ASAP. The front office, which is essentially Jerry Jones, has a decision to make during contract negotiations with Dak Prescott:
  1. Do whatever is necessary to secure the quarterback he has always believed can quarterback the team to a championship or
  2. Roll the dice and hope this new quarterback acquisition can fulfill the exact same expectation before the potential of the current roster deteriorates
Jones is a gambler. The second option is his nature. On the other hand, he hopes everyone will eventually give him the credit he thinks he deserves for backing his current quarterback, midway in his rookie season until the present.

This is another thread worth bookmarking as yet another Prescott what if.
Jerry is the biggest winner right now, by just supporting his current man. The season is about to begin and all will be buck naked then.

JJ to Dak if Dak stinks it up this season:

"We have provided you every opportunity talent-wise to secure this organization at least an NFCCG appearance and for whatever reason you have not delivered, in spite of me giving you the contract you demanded.
Well, we need to move on so for the betterment of this organization and for you, I am asking you to remove your no-trade clause so we can try and find a team that you would want to go to. You can, of course, refuse to remove your no-trade clause as that is your right.
However, it is also my right as owner and GM to do what I have to in order to absorb your $59M cap hit next season to retain your rights as we move on and give Trey Lance the starting job for 2024. As such, I expect you would be supportive of him and this organization. That said, if you choose not to report to the team I have the right to fine you for every day missed.
Then, after the 2024 season, I will release you after June 1st to save this organization the $36M in dead money your release will cost us. Most organizations will have their QBs in place by then so you can settle for an offer from a lower-rung team or a team wanting to offer a 1-year prove-it deal.
So while I appreciate all you have done for the organization, at the end of the day I can and will do what I think is best for this organization first and foremost....so it's your call Dak: you can drop your no-trade clause or you sit while this team moves forward.
Talk to your agent and let me know what you want to do. You have 3-days to get back to me before I make the decision."
I will breathlessly await to see the result of the roster after absorbing a $59 million cap hit, not to mention any other hits based on releasing players to get under the cap.

Oh, and what will the locker room temperature be once the tanking becomes apparent?

I like to refer to it as "micro-drama" if I could coin a term.
I truly find it fascinating why any true Cowboys fan could be upset even marginally at a 4th round dart for a top 3 overall still only 23 golden opportunity.
Doesn't cost us a plug nickel if we miss on such a high upside interest.
SF can proudly proclaim from here on out that Dallas busted on Trey, because they had zero time and just wanted him out of the way, they will just watch anything to deflect SF monumental bust of an investment... lol
One man's trash is another man's treasure, wise man once said that, could apply here, I'm optimistic.
I will gladly take that role of the dice, why peeps get so offended by attempting to add comp at QB esp, but any position is strange to me.

Jerry has already demonstrated supporting current and youthful stars as well.

Dak played on 2mil as the 4th year starter instead of signing a below market extension.

I don't see a guy feeling he owes the franchise anything, and he has a point. If they try to box Dak into taking another below market contract, I can totally see him walking.

What was the locker room temperature after Dak's poor play yet again against SF in the playoffs? If he has a bad year my guess is the sunshine and rainbows "Dak is our QB" will wear very thin.
As for having to release players to get under the cap, Dallas has already taken care of some players this season with only the likes of Lamb and Parsons still to (neither need to be resigned this offseason but rather after 2024) so while Dak's number is a big cap number, there are ways to work around it.
Lastly, even if Dallas performs poorly with Lance as the starter in 2024, that means a higher draft pick for a rookie QB to be selected and a lower cap hit for the QB position in 2025 and beyond.

Lance gives them a potential starter in 2024.

They don’t need to be held up by Dak.

The post June 2024 cut for Dak is gonna happen.

The FO does not have leverage. Adding a QB who lost a backup job to Sam Darnold is not leverage. Signing other players is not leverage.

Here is what leverage is: being regarded by the entire league as a top 10 QB who will be able to walk as a true free agent in 2 seasons with no ability to tag. That is leverage. The only way Dallas could actually try and get leverage is to have one of the top 2 picks next year, but that isn’t going to happen.
Lance suffered two freak injuries.

The kid is gifted with QB talent.

We got lucky.

Dak and his agent especially have to take Dallas overall cap situation into actual consideration now.
I want Lamb inked next~!

This is just not true.

Dak was offered a 33 million per year deal in 2019, and then a 35 million five year deal, 90 million guaranteed, which would have made him the highest paid QB in history. Dak balked at the five year deal and chose to "bet on himself", playing on the tag. He stood firm on his demand for a 4 year deal and waited on a market reset.

Dak played hardball and the Cowboys in no way tried to box him in to a below market contract.

There are many reports of this. Here is just one of them.

He doesn't have a point. The Cowboys drafted him in the 4th round. Nobody drafted him beforehand. He has been more than compensated since with circa $200 million+

There is absolutely no reason Trey ever should have been a top 3rd pick. We had a second round grade on him. Same reason no other team was willing to trade the Niners with anything more than a conditional 6th round pick.

If Dak does what he has done most of his career, which has NFL coaches, scouts. and executives near universally considering him a top 10 QB, he will still land on his feet with the worst case being a 1 year deal worth 45m then cashing in at exactly the same time as previously. Meanwhile the Cowboys will have 70m in dead money spread out over 2 years with their starter being someone who could not beat out Sam Darnold who is not considered a top 35 QB.

The response would be something akin to "talked to the agent and I have no idea how this story leaked in February about your plans to release June 1 but now everyone knows it and knows I was only willing to consider dropping a no trade clause for team x... have a nice day and good luck getting any value from them now when they know they are the only game in town and that they are sure to get me June 1st and enjoy the 70m dead cap hit". If that is your best leverage you have no leverage.
