I think that, even with the injury to Scandrick, we have the luxury of developing Jones a while before asking him to play a ton. He struggled pretty hard yesterday, but rookie DBs typically do. I am fine with him being 4-5 on the depth chart to begin the season and slowly moving forward.

I was also really excited to see him at safety but after watching yesterday, I think he is much better suited to cornerback where he can use his athleticism to stay on a WRs hip. I worry about his tackling at safety to be honest.

Still love the player, but no doubt he looks green. Let's make sure we save him for the next 4 years too!

There is no way they will redshirt him unless he's hurt. They picked him to play right away. There will definitely be growing pains but that just comes with the territory.

Why do so many want to convert everyone to safety?

They need to figure out where they want to put him at and KEEP him there. It's hard enough playing corner at the NFL level, but when you have this guy messing around at the safety position, it becomes extremely difficult to get your bearings.

To clarify - by redshirt I mean leave him lower on the depth chart. Right now he is being outplayed by both White and Patmon.

That may happen anyway. He's going to get playing time and he should. You can't develop him sitting on the bench. White and Patmon will probably see more in the nickel than they will on the outside anyway.

Rookie corners generally suck. But he's not going to ever get better by not playing at all.

A) He missed a week of practice with a banged up shoulder. Luckily, everything checked out. I'm sure he was a little tentative and over-protective last night.
B) He seems to match up well with the TEs in practice (I think I saw a little of it in the game) which would be a huge plus if he could do that.
C) They are throwing a lot on his plate - CB, S, and a little LB.
D) I'd rather have Byron Jones than Minn CB Trae Waynes from what I have seen so far.
E) Mentally, he seems to be a quick learner so I think it is just a matter of him getting acclimated to the speed of the game.
F) No rookie CB is anywhere near starter material week one but the good ones grow quickly with game reps.

It's funny how we all watch the game and come away with diff observations . I guess it's all about expectations, but I thought the kid looked ok.
He got lost in coverage a few times but I was most impressed with his tackling

He wasn't that bad at safety...yes, there were negative plays..

Back to back plays to be exact

On the short rushing TD, he failed to fill in run support and make a stop...he really failed to even get to the RB...looked hesitant asnif he was staying away from contact...plugged the wrong gap and never moved from there as the RB hit a different hole and scored easily...then on the following play he was beaten for 2 by the TE...

He did have one good tackle on a catch on 3 and medium to stop the TE shirt of the sticks to force a 4th down..

Kevin Smith started 6 regular season games as a rookie. The last 6. He then started all 3 playoff games including the super bowl. Frustrating Jerry Rice along the way in the nfc championship. It's a marathon not a sprint.

Darren Woodson started 2 games that same year but played in the nickel. Making the transition from a monster back/weak LB type position. Jimmy Johnson has been reported before that he should have threw more at Woodson as a rookie looking back.

unless you have no idea what redshirt means its your own fault you got worked for using it.

This kid can play safety and corner. No shot in hell I'd sit him. I want this kid out there playing and making plays. He made a beautiful tackle last night. Don't stop his progress.
